Park Slope Dog Kills Area Tree?

2007_5_Dog%20Sign.jpg

Angry Park Slope signage surfaces again, this time on President Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues. With all the angry neighbors out there, we wonder why owners can't get their dogs', um, acts together, especially considering the city's new efforts to green the streets.

New York Shitty's Miss Heather has been monitoring the streets of Greenpoint as usual; she also thinks the Italians are more witty with their dog-poop signage. And did you realize that off-leash hours for Manhattan dogs only apply above 59th Street?

It's always something in Park Slope- complaining and entitlement. It's a way of life. I was reprimanded by a five year old who had a parent proudly looking on.

"Ricco Starr" You scoop your dogshit up and place it in the trashcan dumbass! This is because lazy owners don't take the time to properly clean-up after there pets .

All dogs should be banned. Get a cat. Dogs are a nuisance.

whizzer, you don't know what you're talking about. it doesn't take that many repeated urinations to burn trees but it would take hundreds, if not thousands, of pins to sufficiently lacerate the cambium layer to cause any damage to the tree. the poo, however probably is not doing any harm. to the tree.

Yeah, Whizzer, how did whiners fare 100 years ago when everyone had tuberculosis and typhoid fever?

Admittedly it takes a lot of dog urine, but if everyone's dog uses the same tree over and over for years it can do harm.

Plus why is it so crazy that people don't want dogs pissing and shitting all over everything? It's disgusting.

Ugh, dog lovers or better yet, dog owners.

    crap on them.

Note-writers seem to collect in Park Slope.

    Baloney!

My dog has a very specific area in the yard designated for his business.

Everything in that area grows faster bigger and greener.

I have never seen dog piss kill a tree.

It would take gallons of the stuff.

    Those pushpins are more harmful.

Geez how would these whiners fare in NYC a hundred years ago when horses crapped everywhere?

  • Toby

I love how the person who put up the sign is stabbing the tree with multiple push pins.

  • Crumbliews

Just like buttering toast, eh Rico? Man, your shoes must stink like the stank.

Whenever I let my doog poop, I just smear the turds so thinly on the sidewalk no one even notices it. Quicker for me, and it's not a mess.

It's not the dog poop that kills trees; it's the dog urine. From "The Straight Dope":

...dog urine can cause grass, shrubs, and other plant life to turn brown and wither. This charming phenomenon is called "urine burn." It's caused by the ammonia and urea contained in doggie water (and, for that matter, in the urine of all mammals). Urea and ammonia are both good sources of nitrogen, an important fertilizer. But they're simple compounds and they break down so quickly that the lawn, hedge, or whatever basically ODs on the stuff.
