Roger Clemens Returns to the Yankees

2007_05_sclemens.jpgYankees fans can now rejoice, because Roger Clemens is returning to the New York Yankees. The 44-year old right-hander, who last pitched for the Houston Astros last season, announced his plans to the crowd during the 7th inning stretch of today's Yankees-Mariners game (audio from WCBS), "Well, they came and got me out of Texas. I can tell you, it's a privilege to be back. I'll be talking to y'all soon." How surprising was the announcement? When Clemens left his house this morning, his wife knew, but not his children. Clemens, who has come out of retirement several times, last pitched for the Yankees in 2003. While with the Yankees, Clemens won two World Series rings, in 1999 and 2000. Last season, he was 7-6 with a 2.30 ERA in 19 starts with the Astros.

After his announcement from the owner's box, the Yankee Stadium crowd gave Clemens a "great reception." Clemens said he hopes to come back to the Yankees and help them "get the job done" and that he chose the Yankees because he's comfortable around the other players on the Yankees and has friends on the team, most notably Andy Pettitte. Last season with the Astros, Clemens was paid $22 million. While no contract terms were announced, we think that the Yankees will be paying more than the Astros last year as they're more desperate and they don't get a home town discount. After the game, Randy Hendricks told the media that they went with the Yankees because they were ready for Clemens now. The Astros and Boston Red Sox, who were the other teams being discussed, didn't want Clemens until late June or July.

The return of Clemens, who turns 45 in August, can't come soon enough for the Yankees who have been cursed with early-season injuries to their pitching rotation. Clemens plans to sit down with Yankees officials in the next 48 hours to figure out a timeline, but he hopes to be back by the end of the month or by early June. The addition gives the Yankees a formidable rotation - Mike Mussina, Chien-Ming Wang, Pettitte, and Clemens.

Guess he wants a 3rd Ring?

Look out Sox here come the Yankees, once the Yanks get Hughes back they'll have the most dominant pitching staff in the leauge.

Anyone who thinks that the Astros or Red Sox were not "ready" for him, and did not want him until later, is on crack.

Just BS from his agent to make him seem less greedy.

That aside, good to see him back.

Hall of Fame pitcher... and 44 years old. Lets see how this plays out.

The Astros are pathetic and the Red Sox literally have no use for him right now. The Yankees were his only option.

Lol . Well they kissed his ass for a few months ! I guess it finally paid off for them . Thought I think this has something to do with Andy Pettite playing for the Yanks . Oh well, Not like it's going to make a hell of a difference . We all know the Yanks and Red Sox go through this "Merry-go-round" every year and one of them ends the season either in first, Or somewhere in the vicinity of it .

That's what we the Houston Astro's and Fans get for supporting him and letting him "be closer to his family" the so called reason he could not play until later and go on road trips. He's a jerk always has been we just thought he changed. He is in it for the MONEY only. Thanks Roger for nothing you don't deserve our support.

Until I see Roger pitch I'm not too excited just yet.

The guy is almost 45 and he will be pitching in the AL, just now much does he have left?

I would be happy if he just goes 6-7 inches and gives up less than 4 runs a game.

I heard "the Rocket" goes at least 8 inches.

doesn't matter. Yankees will be lucky to win the wild card and will be out in the first round of the playoffs again. Pitching wins championships and they don't have the arms.

Great job Yanks. Add another millionaire rock-star to your staff. You don't have enough of those. Obviously those type of players don't win. Ha ha! I wonder how The Rocket will feel when "his team" finishes in last place?

his last name, spelled correctly, is Pettitte.

thanks!

What's even more exciting is the Yankees just signed Doc Gooden to a $200K contract to pitch one game. They think he's good for about 70 pitches.

This is Clemens' choice? The man either has a lot of misguided faith in that team or an unhealthy belief in his own ability to change the course of baseball events.

If Clemens wanted to win another World Series, wouldn't the Red Sox have been the smarter choice?

Tim N.

I've read your postings on Gothamist for some time, and you seem like a pretty level headed person, but you're only obvious flaw is your misguided devotion to a "team" that seems to think it can buy itself a world series every year.

The Yankees are the reason MLB needs a salary cap.
