I never thought that I would see my favorite city become so anemic. I hung out/lived in/grew up in NYC/LES from 85-95 and now when I go back to visit it just makes me so sad. I don't recognize it - or Bklyn for that matter. And the music scene IS hotter in other cities....never thought I would say that. There's just more room to grow elsewhere, and art/music kids have no cash. Everyone creative is going to have to move as even Harlem and the Bronx ain't cheap. And that is sad.

But you can't legislate art/music - it's not going to produce anything worthwhile.

The new music scene is weak compared to other cities.

not true, but you need to put forth more effort to find it.

There are less white people in New York than even 10 years ago. Not sure why people bring that argument up - NYC has always been a majority white mixed-income city up until the Latino immigration boom and upper middle class boom. Whatever.

Yawn is right. New York is so over. Nothing left but banks, Duane Reades, Starbucks, and white people in their condos. Theater here is third rate - maybe two good plays a season. The new music scene is weak compared to other cities. New York's symphony is probably not even in the top ten in the US. The opera is where divas go to coast once they make it to the top. The restaurant scene is more interested in making money and getting publicity than doing anything truly innovative. The Met and MoMA are the only institutions at the top of their game.
