FILM: "West 32nd" is one of the films we've been hearing a lot about over the past week (it screened at the Tribeca Film Festival). Tonight Director Michael Kang, executive producer Jamin O'Brien and actor Jun Kim discuss the film, which is based on co-writer Edmund Lee's Village Voice reports on the Korean organized crime in New York City. According to the site, "the conversation will include personal, behind-the-scenes production stories, career advice for Asian American film talent and information on the prospects for marketing Asian American films internationally."
6:30pm // The Korea Society [950 Third Ave, 8th Floor] // Free
TRIVIA: FreeNYC points us to a new kind of trivia night:
"Well here it is, the perfect forum for you or maybe that special someone in your life that can't stop running their mouth after a few pints -- the difference is that instead of having to secure bail money or negotiate with law enforcement, all you need to do is head over to Dempsey's Pub tonight for Drunken Smartass Olympics, a pub quiz/trivia cabaret party hosted by Janet Rosen and Tony Hightower. (As seen on Law & Order!)"
7:30pm // Dempsey's Pub [61 2nd Ave] // Free
MUSIC: Grab It! The Music of JacobTV promises to be a festival of dance, music, video, and intermedia work.
"Jacob Ter Veldhuis’s work possesses explosive strength and raw energy combined with extraordinarily intricate architectural design. Preoccupied with American mass media and world events, JacobTV draws raw material from those sources. He has had a huge impact on the European music scene in the past decade, but is far less known in the United States. This three-day festival is the first large-scale examination of his music in the US."
Speaking of examining music...check out this hour long video of David Byrne discussing the science of music with producer/neuroscientist Daniel Levitin.
8pm // The Whitney Museum of American Art at Altria [20 Park Ave] // Free
THEATER: Eric Overmyer’s 1985 comedy On the Verge follows three plucky Victorian female explorers who, armed with machetes, umbrellas, and rope, travel through time to encounter the very strange inhabitants of 20th Century America. Overmyer’s whimsical and erudite adventure has been widely produced since its premiere; the adventurous Phoenix Theatre Ensemble now blasts it further into the 21st Century. - John Del Signore
8pm // The Connelly Theater [220 E 4th St] // Tickets cost $20.
