Suspected Fatal Hit-and-Run Driver Was Unlicensed

2007_04_palmcentral.jpgPolice arrested and charged tow-truck driver Melvin Morales with vehicular manslaughter in Sunday morning's hit-and-run death of a 13-year-old boy. Anthony Delgado had been biking along Central Avenue and was killed when a car making a turn at Palmetto and Central hit him.

The police found Morales after using footage from, as the Post puts it, a "high-tech video surveillance system set up by drug dealers to protect the building they once used as their den." Investigators found paint on Morales' tow truck that matched Delgado's bike. The Daily News also reports that Morales, 34, had a blood alcohol of 0.096 (the limit is 0.08) and did not have a license. His license was suspended in May 2006 for not answering multiple summonses, but had gotten into an accident in December 2006 and was "convicted March 19 in Manhattan on another charge of driving without a license."

A friend who was in the tow truck with Morales during the time of the accident said, "We didn't hit any kid on a bicycle. They are just looking for someone to blame." Morales was held without bail after his arraignment; Delgado's stepfather told the Post, "If you left it up to me, I'd let street justice deal with him. As much time as they give him, it won't bring back my son."

Police using drug dealers video surveillance? I'm glad they caught the guy, but that has to be one for the record books...

uh, how could delgado be held without bail when he is 1) the victim and 2)dead??

If you didn't hit any him with your truck how did the paint from the bike get on the car?

BIG FAT LIER. Just like the driver himself.

This is ridiculous ! It's sad but eventually this is going to lead to some serious restrictions drivers already endure . Why was this guy behind the wheel in the first place ? What the cops were to busy trying to bust the prostitutes over their ?

melvin morales may not have commited this crime yes he was wrong for drunk driveing, suspended lisence(how ever u spell it)but i really dont think he hit anthony delgado and how could they say in the begining it was a suv then a truck the story keeps changing and the 2nd hand driver stated he did not hit anybody so i still think they should look into this.........

I THINK MELVIN MORALES IS NOT NO MONSTER THE WAY THERE PUTTIN IT. BECAUSE ACCIDENTS DO HAPPEN. ASK YOURE SELF WHAT A 13 YEAR OLD BOY IS DOING OUT IN THEM DANGEROUS STREETS AT THE TIME RUNNING A BIKE WHEN INSTEAD HE SHOLDVE BEEN SLEEPING TO GO TO SCHOOL MONDAY MORNING I THINK IS ANTHONYS PARENTS THE ONE THAT ARE WRONG.I AM SO SORRY ABOUT THIS FATAL ACCIDENT BUT THEY NEED TO STOP SAYING ALL THEM DIFFERENT STORYS AND GET 2 THE POINT BECAUSE MAYBE MELVIN IS NOT THE MONSTER MAYBE THE MONSTER IS OUT THERE WITH A BIG SMILE.GIVE HIM A CHANCE.
