To The Quarters: Post and Daily News Square Off

2007_04_quarter.pngTwo weeks ago, Post announced that it was raising its price from 25 cents to 50 cents, with the change going into effect this week. Gawker noticed that a camera crew was filming the new price change for the paper, but NY1 found that the Daily News lowered its price to 25 cents for the week! So sneaky - we almost expect Rupert Murdoch (whose News Corp owns the Post) to visit Daily News owner Mort Zuckerman with a sock full of quarters!

NY1 also got these comments from people buying their papers:

"I'm still a Post fan. I'll pay the extra quarter, like everyone else I'm sure will,” said one reader. “We'll all complain, but we'll all stay pay for it."

“I don't think that the difference between 25 cents and 50 cents is enough to get me to switch,” added another.

There's a Times Select article about the Post's decision to raise prices: "raising the newsstand price might help stem the paper's losses, estimated to be about $70 million a year."

We have a feeling most people we know will stick to reading the Post either online or over someone's shoulder on the train.

$50, $25, free--who cares! Both of those papers are horrible rags that should go away.

It's still less expensive than a roll of toilet paper.

I think the post sucks anyways, you couldn't pay me to take that paper

Of course, readers of the "Post" and the "Daily News" are not loyal to the price of the paper, but to its editorial content. Each paper has its own loyal hometown demographic based on class, ethnicity, and geography, who do not consider the papers interchangeable.

i only occasionally read the post cause it was the cheapest one when I couldn't find a AMny or Metro free paper around. They had to lower the price of NY post to 25 cents cause no one bought the paper. Now that it's back to 50 cents everyone will go back to the Daily news. It's called internet news on your cellphone people. Newspapers suck now.

The Post is extremely entertaining and definitely worth a quarter... but not 50 cents. If there isn't a story, then they'll make one up (see the EXCLUSIVE last year: BIN LADEN COKE PLOT). This is journalism at its finest.

As a good lefty New Yorker, I felt guilty even giving a quarter to support the Post's ridiculously conservative editorial page. But, sometimes if I was headed to the subway without my usual reading material (Times, New Yorker, etc.), I admit I bought the post. Phew, now that its back up to 50 cents, it evens up with the more reasonable Daily News. Guilt be gone!

Why does anyone pay for the paper these days? The Times is so biased it is making Fox News look good. At least Fox News invites the opposition onto their shows. I'll read the Times online but I sure as hell won't pay for it.

I just read all the news online and during my train ride have the ipod on with my eyes closed.

I have seen copies of The Post in the past few weeks saying it was "Only 75¢" however, I think it was in New Jersey somewhere.

"We have a feeling most people we know will stick to reading the Post either online or over someone's shoulder on the train."

I'd be ashamed if most people I knew even read the Post.

And yes, the Post has always cost more outside of the Greater NYC area.
