As [11] proved, driving a car is perhaps the ultimate antisocial public activity. Drivers completely cut themselves off from everyone around them, so they don't have to care. Their only means of communciation is honking the horn. It's much worse than being in a subway and not making eye contact with anybody.

And yes, the comments system here still sucks. Don't hold your breath waiting for it to be fixed. Jake has other priorities, like looking for the next great piece of "street art." I nominate Gothamist for the FU award for most infuriating, frequent and cryptic error messages in blogdom. Anyone else want to vote with me? Jen needs another award for the mantle.

I live and drive in Bushwick and not only are the drivers horrible (running lights, passing, driving down the wrong side of the street) the cops are just as bad if not worse. At some point someone's got to do something about people and police not abiding by basic traffic laws in this neighborhood. Driving through Bushwick is like maneuvering through an obstacle course!

What kind of parent allows a 13 year old to be out on the streets unsupervised after midnight?

I don't know any decent, caring parent who would permit this.

#11: more like a public menace.

Good thing the city finally appears to be seeing the light. Drivers can look forward to paying congestion fees and watching as more city streets are taken away from drivers, and rightfully returned to pedestrians.

This is a horrible tragedy and I hope they find the person who did it. I suspect they fled because they are in some other kind of legal trouble, but I have never hit anybody with a car.

Obviously I am not blaming the victim but if you a ride a bike, make sure you are properly illuminated.

Why would the driver of the SUV stick around after killing the kid on his bike? It's not like he was going to get a ticket or anything.

In this case, the driver was wrong to leave and I hope they catch the person in question and throw some kind of book at them.

Some of the comments here are priceless though. Don't hate just because you don't own a car.

Also, you fuckheads need to be kept on your toes, so consider my car and I a public service.

#8 Chris - "god knows when i ride my bike 90% of the time i almost get hit it is because -I- was doing something dumb": maybe you shouldn't be riding a bicycle in the city.

#5 pb - Correct, as long as the NYPD street cops continue to do most of their work from inside the fishbowl of an automobile, that will frame their worldview. Those of us without automobiles (that is, the majority of New Yorkers) are that much more alien to the NYPD - and treated as such.

"it doesn't seem to apply to this situation, but ..."

Then your comment is a non sequitur waste of time that takes focus away from a tragedy and the attempt to bring those at fault to justice. Save it.

it doesn't seem to apply to this situation, but to address the previous comments - sometimes pedestrians and bikers do the wrong thing - it's not always the driver's fault. god knows when i ride my bike 90% of the time i almost get hit it is because -I- was doing something dumb, like running a light, stop sign, or riding in between cars.

I was out of town this weekend and saw a similar incident on the local TV news where the police were looking for a driver who'd killed a pedestrian. It seems like elsewhere police pay attention to these killings and actually prosecute drivers whether they stay or leave. Maybe our cops should get out of their cars and walk so they can understand what it's like to be a pedestrian and leave their blinkered car-consciousness and empathy behind.

Even if they find this guy, do we really expect the police to file any charges beyond "Leaving the Scene of an Accident"? The simple fact is that pedestrians are killed by people in cars, killings that would be called "murder" (or at least manslaughter), had any other weapon been used. Our laws in this area need major reform.
