Last Night's Action: Avoiding the Hole

Devils 3, Senators 2 (2OT): Things appeared to be going according to plan for the Devils. They jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in a game they needed to avoid an 0-2 deficit in the Eastern Conference semifinals. That plan got broken when Dany Heatley tied the game with 26.4 seconds left. The first overtime was ripe with chances -- tired skaters lead to open shots -- but the Devils needed to the second session to capitalize. Martin Brodeur said a loss would have been "devastating," and he should be believed. Games 3 and 4 of the series will be played in Ottawa.

Yankees 3, Red Sox 1: Jeff Karstens got hit -- and had his fibula broken, as it turned out -- on a line drive on the first pitch of the game. He pitched with the injury for the batter, but then gave way to Kei Igawa, who got David Ortiz to hit into a double play and ended up throwing six shutout innings. Ortiz said Igawa was "all right" and "nothing special," but the Yankees will take it. They had lost seven straight, and four of those were to the Red Sox.

Mets 6, Nationals 2: Washington's so bad the Mets almost don't deserve credit for beating the Nationals in extra innings. But the win counts just the same, and it came thanks to the two hitters who are supposed to do damage: Carlos Beltran and David Wright. Castoff starter Jerome Williams held the Mets hitless or 5 1/3 innings -- and almost hit a home run -- but the Mets recovered in time. They'll play the rubber game Sunday.
