Extra, Extra

  • Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: a gas leak on Flatbush Ave. in Brooklyn, a shooting on Holland Ave. in the Bronx, and a boat in distress at the World's Fair Marina in Queens.
  • Three Staten Island homes were looted following last week's nor'easter that damaged a retaining wall and forced residents to evacuate.
  • Pope Benedict will be the third pontiff to visit NYC, but it won't be anytime this year.
  • The fire that ultimately claimed the life of a grandmother to 20, as neighbors and family members jumped from upper-floor windows to escape flames, was started by a child playing with a lighter.
  • A UPS delivery man was diverting guns addressed to a pistol and rifle range in Chelsea and selling them himself. The man in brown is arrested and the BATF is investigating who wound up with the undelivered packages.
  • We're not sure who should be most offended by this: Muslims for having their traditional dress scorned, Elizabeth Wolff, whose editor forced her to dress in a chador all day and then write about it, or NY Post readers, who will soon be asked to fork over an extra quarter to read articles like this.
  • Heads up for the young ladies: Joey Buttafuoco has been released from prison, again. If you're a woman too young to know who Joey Buttafuoco is, we are talking to you.
  • Massachusetts prosecutors have arrested two Bostonians and charged them with the killing of a New York woman, just recently moved to the city.
  • A 13-year-old riding his bike last night was hit and killed by the driver of an SUV that sped from the scene.

wow. 2 weeks in and hogarty has already decided to stop dealing with pesky spelling and grammar mistakes. welcome to the team, buddy!

Why would the driver of the SUV stick around after killing the kid on his bike? It's not like he was going to get a ticket or anything.

So the nypost discovers what racism is like. Good job!

...whose editor forced her to dress in a chador all day and then write about it ...

Damn, that is a dumb article! It's the news version of "white chicks".

Newsflash!!
Wearing a unfamiliar style of clothing is uncomfortable and might take some getting used to.
Newsflash!!

It also might add to the discomfort if you are apeing a culture of which you are wholly unfamiliar. Could she be misinterpreting the familial glances of middle eastern men as salacious and unwelcomed? Who knows, but she was ignorant enough of the culture to pen this article so her mid-east studies might be somewhat limited. Maybe next week she'll try a sikh headscarf, or the deucedly complicated traditional kimono, I'll bet those take some getting used to as well.

I had a pair of cowboy boots once and when I first put them on they were uncomfortable and I thought people were staring at them, but in only a month or two later they were all comfy. Then just when they were finally comfortable they became dated and stupid. So I threw them out and got new shoes.

The point of the article should not be that the chador is uncomfortable, but that it is dated and stupid. The author fails to make this point although it does lurk at the fringes. A quick read of this article makes one ask "would the problems of arab women be solved if the traditional dress were more comfortable?", as if maybe some lycra panels, cargo pockets and an elastic waistband might make all the difference.
