Last Night's Action: Devils Can't Recover

2006_12_sdevilslogo.gif

  • Senators 5, Devils 4: Few teams hold leads as well as the Devils. Unfortunately for them, that skill doesn't translate to recovering from early deficits. New Jersey trailed for all but 90 seconds of this game and found itself down by four goals at the 16:39 mark. Goalie Martin Brodeur didn't get pulled, but it didn't matter. Patrick Elias missed the game with a cold, but the Devils will need a better start to win Game 2. The captain's return won't be enough.

  • Blue Jays 6, Yankees 0: With their -- and baseball's -- top pitching prospect making his Major League debut, the Yankees went down meekly again. Phil Hughes followed the lead of the Yankees starters by not finishing the fifth inning. He allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out five. The Yankees have lost six straight and welcome Boston for three games this weekend. If they don't end that streak soon, things could get ugly.

  • Red Bulls 1, FC Dallas 0: After 360 minutes of play, the Red Bulls haven't allowed a goal. They won't lose too many games if they keep playing like that. They're 3-0-1, and they set an MLS record for the longest shutout streak to start a season.
