Coach Accused of Battering Students

2007_04_bats.jpgHigh school baseball is off to a vicious start. Two students at Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn claim that the assistant baseball coach at a Manhattan high school beat them with a metal bat earlier this week. One of the victims has a broken jaw, while the other was cut on the face and neck.

The Daily News reports that the two students say that Norman Thomas High School assistant baseball coach Ernesto Cruz - with some of his players - attacked them during an exhibition baseball game between the two schools. Raphael Mercedes and David Garcia were cheering for a Fort Hamilton pitcher when Cruz allegedly yelled, "What what you say or we can throw down right here."

Cruz, who was arrested and charged with assault, menacing, and more, tells the Daily News that he was the one who was attacked and that he'll be cleared. "I didn't have a bat. I didn't have nothing. They attacked me...They were gang members...[who] pull out bats from a silver Jeep... All I did was hold my kids back while [the other teens] were punching and kicking me." The Daily News does not mention whether Cruz had noticeable injuries.

And Fort Hamilton won the game, 10-5.

a throw down? during pre-season??

i wonder if the wooden bats they'll have to use next year would cause less severe injuries.

Hmmmm, I guess the coach was serious when he said "Drop and give me twenty" !

first it's the blacks and their basketball,
now it's the hispanics and their baseball,
can we just get rid of sports in the public school system?

I would first like to start of by saying that Mr. Cruz was approached by a group of teens and was the actual victim. The teens were given the option of leaving before anything started but they refused. The altercation started before the game ended where the teens were making remarks directly to Mr. Cruz which spilled over to the streets after the game. The coach of Fort Hamilton can testify that Mr. Cruz is innocent because he tried to get in the middle of it and stop it. I never saw Mr. Cruz swing a bat to injury any of the kids. I am not saying he did or didn’t but initially from where I was standing I did not see him bring a bat with him. The teens are also apart of a gang who are known for being violent and resides in Sunset Park Brooklyn and call them selves “Five-Six-Seven”. Norman Thomas won the game and not Fort Hamilton 10-5

I'm Mr. Cruz's neighbor. I doubt the boys' story simply because there's so many junkies in our building that are always peeing and doing drugs in the hallways. Mr. Cruz has never beat them with a baseball bat even though the junkies are certainly more annoying than some hecklers. I think if Mr. Cruz were prone to beating people with baseball bats, he would've pounded our resident junkies a long time ago.
