Gimme Shelter

2007_4_ask_tent.jpgI just got my tickets for Glastonbury Festival and I'm really excited. But I need a tent and a backpack. I don't really want to buy either because of the cost and the issue of storing them when I'm not really sure I'll ever use them again. (Unless for Glastonbury next year) Is there anywhere in New York that will rent you tents and backpacks?

Tent & Trails offers equipment rentals for things such as tents, backpacks and sleeping bags. As far as backpacks, they offer two styles, a Jansport D-3 and a Kelty Continental Divide. They charge a flat rate for the first three nigts, and additional for each day over that. You can also rent a pack for a weekly rate. All backpack rentals require a $165 deposit.
They also have 2,4 and 6 person tents available for rental - as well as foam pads and sleeping bags. Tents can be rented for 3 days or weekly, and require a deposit.

If you can get yourself to the Marlton, NJ REI, you can pick up rental backpacks and tents there as well.

Other than that, it looks like you might have to borrow from a friend or purchase one. You can always try selling it when you're done on Craigslist or Ebay, where you also might be able to find one used.

Marlton, NJ is in Burlington County, which basically means you can't take a train there from Penn Station or Hoboken, given as it is in that other part of Jersey called South Jersey.

Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) will also rent these things. There's one in SoHo on Bway & Prince, another on the UWS.

I went to the Big Chill last summer and ended up buying all of my gear at Argos - and subsequently left it with the guy I was living with in London. There is a company that brings rentals to certain festivals (google for tangerinefields) but they're not doing Glasto this year.

While it may be cheaper to bring stuff with you, it may be easier to buy some/all of it there. Make sure any gear you plan to bring fits into your suitcase.

Go to EMS and buy their EMS-branded gear. You could get a decent tent & backpack for under $100 each.

Or, rent from them if you don't want to spend the dough.

You can buy very cheap tents in the UK - at Argos or Millets for example - and you don't need to take it back with you. Glastonbury are supporting the 'give me shelter' campaign which is encouraging people to donate their tents and other camping items to charity - helping to change lives in desparate situations worldwide. All you need to do is leave your packed up tent at one of the collection points when you leave. Look out for give me shelter volunteers in t-shirts with an orange logo.
