Well...I understand that statistically, you're going to have some idiots. It's the case anywhere. However, a number of my friends are culinary students, and for them to get treated like ass when they go over...it's one block over from a school full of culinary & pastry students who would gladly buy stuff! Why jeopardize that kind of potential income?

i love ny baking company's attitude. this is how all new yorkers used to be -- intolerant of idiots. but now the idiots outnumber the nyers, and they're paying two grand for studios. (well at least they're consistent.)

Don't waste your time buying their chocolate. It is horribly over-priced. I forgot to add this, as well as the fact that the lady at the register is VERY nice.

For hardware, there's also the restaurant supply store on and around the Bowery, at Houston, down to around Prince. Great prices, huge selection on every tool pot pan utensil cutting surface and appliance you can imagine, and it's always impressive to see the massive ovens, grills, range tops, mixers, etc. that the big boys and girls get to use, that would take up your entire apartment (like the vulcan ranges).

Don't waste your time buying their chocolate. It is horribly over-priced. If you want reasonably priced chocolate try any of the Fairways as an alternate. Even if Fairway is out of your way it is financially worth it. Callebout chocolate should not be $10 or $11 per pound. Some of the staff is friendly. The man with the dark curly hair is EXTREMELY rude.

I couldn't agree more about the rudeness/lack of service there - which seems to be the norm with specialty stores in NYC, especially if you're not an absolute expert in the field of whatever supply store you're in. I mean, isn't that why stores HAVE employees, so the customers can ask questions and get help finding what they need?

Yeah, it's between 5th and 6th - numbers on that block between 5th and 6th between 14th and 23rd are below 100. I went in there to speak with the manager once and found him and the lady working there very nice. Hmm!

No question that they're a little short on customer service, (it has the vibe of a wholesaler who's forced to put up with us retail shoppers,) but they have stuff I don't find anywhere else. And I'm not a baker at all, I use the pans, dyes and cake decorations (best place in the city for plastic cupids!) in craft projects - mostly for theater props. Also - Gothamist, I think it's actually between 5th and 6th.

Very true, though I do enjoy watching the reaction of the employees when customers ask questions about ingredients and equipment they know nothing about. I call them the "baking nazis."

Although, the negative to New York Cake Supplies is that they're notorious for being unhelpful and sometimes rude. Many folks I know don't even bother with them unless it's an absolute necessity, and stick with Broadway Panhandler or find their wares online.
