New York City is Rolling in $urplu$

2007_03_billsigning2.jpgNew York City's budget surplus just got a little bigger. The previously projected surplus of $3.9 billion has been upped to a projected $4.4 billion for the fiscal year ending June 30th. Despite the additional projected surplus, Mayor Bloomberg is being prudent with the extra money.

While there's a projected surplus for this year, Bloomberg is going to use the extra money to pay down expected future debt. $1.3 billion is going towards the projected $1.6 billion deficit in 2009 and $1 billion toward 2010's $3.3 billion deficit. Where's all the money coming from? City agency cutbacks and surprise revenue from all the large real estate sales (hello, Stuy Town). Further details of the mayor's 2008 Budget and Financial Plan are being presented at City Hall today.

Some of the projected surplus will go towards cutting property taxes and the city's sales tax on clothes and shoes as well as funding health programs for ground zero workers and the mayor's initiatives in PlaNYC.

#9, it's a pity you don't read newspapers, and instead believe Bloomberg's campaign blitz.

MAYORAL RIVALS CALL FOR EXPANDING CHILD HEALTH COVERAGE

    New York Times

    October 25, 2005

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and his Democratic opponent, Fernando Ferrer, laid out similar health care agendas yesterday, each promising to enroll more than 200,000 children in Medicaid and other government health plans, and to invest in medical technology.

In the article, both candidates duked it out to say who "thought of it first," but the point was that IT WAS PROMISED BY BOTH SIDES.

    It's 2007, and we're still waiting.

Maybe the rest of America can (dare I say it?) learn from New York and put someone into power who actually has a brain in his head for a change.

Maybe the Democrats will wake up to the fact that in a city where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans 20 to 1 the Republican candiates have won four straight mayoral elections. While Giuliani and Bloomberg have little in common with Bush there is a lesson to be learned that the voters will pick the moderate over the far left candidate. Of course, that would require someone like Hillary (or Gore or Kerry before her) to actually pay attention to the voters and not only to her advisers or doners.

Remember when Rudy said he thought he should stay on despite term limits cause NYC couldn't do without him?

No. Show me where he said that.

  • timbnyc

I thought the point of all this development was that the increased tax revenue would benefit the citizens. Instead we get big bank accounts and cuts in city services? I guess it's clear who he's governing for.

  • razed paradise

true, illegal parkers should not get a break,

this applies to the NYPD, too.

  • Phillip Packer

Great, let's finally spend some of this money on making this place better for it's citizens like parks, ball fields, schools and other requirements that the residential folks that need services and account for the majority of the surplus deserve.

  • i kind of wish the city could take all it's extra money, put it in a money bin (a la scrooge mcduck) and let residents roll around in it.

Amazing. People are never satisfied. What does writing tickets have to do with surplus? Why should people who park illegally get a break because there's a surplus? brb, gonna suck some Bloomberg dick. HTFH.

  • gourmet koffie

I can't believe this is the same car.

Well, let's not start sucking each other's dicks quite yet.

Oh, he made a lot of promises, one was taking over the Board of Ed and the other was healthcare for all Children in NYC. And, no smoking in bars.

  • Brian

Can we all rush to suck Bloomberg's dick anyway?

  • SP

And yet, despite the surplus, the assholes are writing parking tickets like it's going out of style and ripping up grass fields to install artificial turf because they claim it's too expensive to maintain grass ones. what a bunch of shitheads.

  • b

I don't recall that being one of his campaign promses - healthcare for all kids in NYC

  • Watchful critic

Let's not all rush to suck Bloomberg's dick just yet.

It's amazing how there's a surplus yet there's no universal health coverage for NYC children, something he promised in his 2005 campaign.

Being a leader is not just about the bottom line. It's about people, too. Remember those....people?

Bloomberg has got the golden touch - no matter where he is he can't help but make profits or surpluses.

  • David Charles

Guilty. I voted for Mark Green. That's what makes it all so special.
