There's no small amount of dark humor in the book. Perhaps that's what she meant. I find the description rather off-putting, but I'm willing to give the adaptation a chance.

"We don't want to do a depressing descent into the world of suicide." Oh, my God. This is truly horrifying. Why bother, then? Seriously? This is a highly autobiographical work of fiction by a poet who (wait for it) ultimately committed suicide! I've always hated Stiles. Now it's confirmed.

no. no. no. this will not do! Remakes. Rehashes. Cry. The novel is far too complex to be made into a film. I would love to see what is hard to make sense of on paper be transferred to a Julia Stiles film. And nothing is more depressing then her career and limited range. surely she is a nice person.

Sounds like a Lifetime movie. If Julia Stiles has her heart set on an "uplifting" young woman in New York story, why doesn't she just get herself signed up for the sequel to "Devil Wears Prada" or maybe she should just stick with "Mona Lisa Smiles - Again."
