Pencil This In

READINGS: Russell Simmons has written a self-help book and will be at Border's today promoting it (okay, now all of this recent noise he's making makes more sense)! It's called "Do You! 12 Laws to Access the Power in You to Achieve Happiness and Success." None of the laws include any of these three words.

1pm // Border’s [100 Broadway] // Free

As we mentioned a few weeks ago, Tim Gunn will be reading from his new book with co-author Kate Moloney. That book is called "A Guide to Quality, Taste and Style," so it's sort of like a self help book...just more fashionable.

7pm // Border's [Time Warner Center, 10 Columbus Circle] // Free

MUSIC: Spank Rock are at Virgin Megastore for a free show tonight. If you don't want to hear any of the words that Russell Simmons thinks should be banned from lyrics...you might not want to go. Here they are at McCarren Pool last summer:

7pm // Virgin Megastore Union Square [52 East 14th St] // Free

Heads Up Display, NYC Smoke, Ford & Fitzroy and Hands & Knees are at the Annex tonight. The latter is a Boston band that we hadn't heard until today and are certainly worth listening to. They're described as a mix of "punk thrash" and indie pop with "choral explosions," and should be a good fit with with Ford & Fitzroy.

8pm // The Annex [152 Orchard St] // Price TBD

THEATER: Mother Load is a new solo show written and performed by Amy Wilson, who co-starred in the Tony-winning Broadway play The Last Night of Ballyhoo. Mother Load mines laughs and suspense from the high-anxiety milieu of Bobo child rearing, “where a toddler's birthday party must be catered, a stroller costs eight hundred dollars, and competitive ‘sanctimommies’ lurk in every playgroup.” The show’s tagline says it all: “Always remember: YOU are the adult.” For related reading, peruse this article in the current Brooklyn Rail about “Mommy Wars” in Brooklyn. (On Wednesday, Wilson performers “Mom matinees” at 11am.) - John Del Signore

8pm // Sage Theater [711 Seventh Ave, 2nd Floor] // Tickets cost $45. [Save $10 when ordering online by using code NYTM.]

COMEDY: Tap in to your inner nerd and your inner class clown all at the same time, it's comic book club night! ”Iron your capes, unplug the Bat Signal and set your decoder rings on awesome: the Comic Book Club is in session! The Comic Book Club is a weekly comic book talk show featuring the best comedians in New York talking shop with industry professionals from all corners of the comic book world.”

9:30pm // People's Improv Theater [154 W 29th St] // $5

Wow, White hipster DJ's playing famous group's licks, with a couple blase rappers. See how the crowd goes wild when they're playing the recognizable music, but the arms go down when the rappers start rappin'?....Yay Mcarren pool, not only are clothing styles in the audience recycled from 20 years ago, the music is biting the past too..At least they arent working too hard so they can drink while they spin someone elses music so amazingly......
