Life is about balance. If you can afford to BOTH pay for a designer cat that is germ-free, plus insurance AND make a donation to shelters that provide wonderful pets for those who can't afford or choose not to have the designer pet - that would be nice. Someone in this comment group might be spending more than they should on wine/beer when they could give a little to the shelters.

I have 2 adopted kitties and developed allergies to them after having lived w/ them for years... I just keep the apartment as clean as possible (very frequent vaccuming and dusting), take Claritin, and wipe the cats down with some of those cat-cleaning wipes which are supposed to reduce the dander. I have to admit though, that orange tabby is awfully cute!

There's really no reason to spend money - any money - for a pet, with so many dying in shelters every damn day. Walk through Petco in Union Square any day and see the cats and dogs from Being Kind and you'll agree. Do what I do around our two cats and take a damn Allegra.

$5 says these people are otherwise ordinary liberal New Yorkers that would think nothing about lecturing the rest of us about income inequality and the evils of Republicans. These people are on par with the guy from Tyco and his $10,000 shower curtain.

Wow, that is a lot of bank for a kitty, but it's definitely true that the pleasure derived from having a cat for 14+ years doesn't compare to a week's vacation, no matter how fabulous that week is. Obviously these folks couldn't go the shelter route, but I wish everyone else would - it kills me to see dogs and cats in cages (I have two rescue cats at home myself).

Well, I for one hope that competition comes into play soon because I'd love to have a cat that I wasn't allergic to, but not for 7 grand.
