Queens Residents Help Capture Suspected Rapist

2007_04_hhr3.jpgWhile boldly trying to rob an apartment in Hollis, Queens on Thursday, Robert Williams was arrested after a scuffle with residents. And when police brought him to the station, a sergeant realized he was the prime suspect in the Hamilton Heights rape case, where a 23-year-old Columbia graduate student was raped and tortured for 19 hours last weekend. Williams was charged with kidnapping, arson, attempted murder, rape, robbery and sex abuse.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly revealed some more details about what the rapist did. He had been waiting for a target in the elevator of the Hamiltion Heights apartment building, saw the graduate student, and then forced his way into the apartment. From NY1: "Just as she's about to fully close the door, he pushes his way in, asks her if this individual he was initially looking for lives in the apartment," says Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. "She says, 'no,' starts to scream. He puts her in a choke-hold and proceeds to attack her."

The NY Times reports, "Over the next 19 hours, Mr. Kelly said, the man tied the woman to her bed with computer cables and taped her mouth closed, raped and sodomized her repeatedly, burned her with hot water and bleach, slit her eyelids with scissors, and force-fed her an overdose of ibuprofen or a similar pain reliever." And Post says that doctors feared she would need a liver transplant; a law enforcement source said, "It was the most savage beating where the victim survived. This is not the act of an insane man, this was the action of an evil man." And the rapist also set fire to the apartment, but somehow the woman, even though she was bound by coaxial cables, managed to break free and escape.

2007_04_hrr5.jpgWilliams was caught by Queens residents when he tried to break into an apartment. The Daily News reports that cousins Devin Dodson and George Guadalupe (pictured) were at home when Williams burst into Guadalupe's apartment with a hammer. Other residents helped contain Williams by "beating him up" until the police arrived. They didn't know he was the rapist until later, causing one of the residents to tell the Post, "If we had known he was a rapist, he wouldn't have made it off this block."

Williams had been living in an vacant apartment in the building for the past few days. During a court appearance, his defense lawyer said Williams didn't speak at all, but when he did mumble, a judge said, "You'll have a chance to speak at your trial," to which Williams exclaimed, "I don't have a chance anyway." The judge held Williams without bail.
The rape victim is still scheduled to graduate next month, but she remains in the hospital in stable condition. One student told NY1, "Everyone at Columbia was just thinking about her and hoping for a speedy recovery, and just amazed that she was able to endure what she did and get away is just phenomenal." And though everyone is glad the suspect has been captured, one student told the NY Times, "I feel relief, but this doesn’t mean there isn’t some other psycho out there."

devin and george! i love those guys now!

I second the motion for Mr. Williams to burn in hell.

We did this for Sean Bell! Why a brotha gotta go to jail for raping a white fine haired ho? Nigga pleaseee.

I so wish they residents had known he was the rapist.

where is al sharpton?

When Williams goes to trial he merely has to mention those magical get-out-of-jail-free words: "I'm mental." A few months spent perfecting his basketweaving and fingerpainting skills at Pilgrim States, and he's back on the streets.

Way to go Mr. Dodson, Mr. Guadalupe, and fellow residents! Representing for Hollis, Queens! You're bringing justice and have prevented many horrible atrocities in the future! God bless you! You are real heroes: courageous and able to get the job done!

YEAH! Where is Sharpton?

Come on Sharpton where are you?

Why not speak out about this? It involves a black man. that's right the attacker was black so I will not talk.

Yes, an African-American male, and others, are responsible for capturing the monster. Most lower-Manhattanites would have whimpered, "Please don't hurt me, Mr. Man-With-Hammer," and quickly run away. But these guys beat the perpetrator down at great personal risk. These guys are real heroes, like Wesley Autrey.

Nah, nobody will have a shot at him. He'll be protected in prison, in order to save his pathetic little life. It's America, guys -- prisoners have rights!!! Hillary and Obama and Pelosi, etc. are making darn sure of that!!

And the poor girl -- she'll have to face him in court. He'll be there, all decked out in a fancy suit, clean-shaven, looking like a freakin' investment banker. Shit, "justice is so pathetic and disgusting -- I wish the Hollis homies had known who this guy was. On the other hand, then *those* poor guys would be up for murder charges.

So the American justice system says: Long live Robert Williams! Yay!!!

We'll I am glad to see that the "Don't Snitch" campaign hasn't engulfed all of the young black subculture.

Michael Moore was roundly criticized for saying that the 9/11 attacks would have been thwarted if more of the passengers on the hijacked airliners had been black men. The thing is, he was totally right, just like the comment I quoted. White men, except for those from the working class, often are sissies when push (literally) comes to shove. It pains me to say this, being a white man, but the truth is the truth. If Dodson and Guadalupe were a couple of white businessmen they never would have physically confronted Williams.

Good job, Devin, George and friends!!

Thank you Dodson, Guadalupe and residents of Queens!!!!

You have to wonder if Williams can plead insanity - he tried to destroy evidence by throwing boiling water and bleach on the victim. Anyway, it's a horrible crime and I'm very glad the Dodson and Guadalupe - as well as their neighbors - managed to help capture him.

I'm just glad that Devin and George put a stop to this criminal when they had a chance.

This may be off topic but I don't understand the bias and racism that permeates this board when it comes to crime in NYC. It is sad that so many New Yorkers seem all too willing to believe the worst about a group of people because of the actions of a few.

What kind of life is that to carry such bigotry in your heart?

Here's the problem with the push-in style crime, women letting criminals get too close, etc: Most women are trained to be polite. And God forbid, we don't want to seem "racist" by appearing afraid of a black man. That would be rude. Sorry, not to be a race baiter, but this wish from polite society to not appear racist probably sometimes plays a role in people being crime victims.

And FYI: I saw a white man lurking by my apartment door one night, and was totally freaked out, but still had that need not to appear "rude," so I stupidly said, "Hello," instead of "What the fuck are you doing here?" I still don't know who he was, or what he was doing....

Because of our 200 years in slavery, foo!
We're constantly being oppressed!! Credit Cards companies should all come together and make a race card so we get discounts and free shit, that way we don't have to steal from you people any more. And by you people, i mean crackers(unsalted).

WOW, 90% of the comments posted before mine are just plain stupid. Get over the race card already.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program. This was one of the most heinously committed crimes documented in a long time. What kind of ANIMAL would do what he is accused of doing to another human or living being?

I'm happy that this guy was caught before he could strike again . The thing that bothers me here is, Are those the guys that turned him in ? If so then they wouldn't be trusted with any conversations I held in their presence .

The Columbia blog was trying to cover this but kept getting bogged down by liberal zombies parroting their teachers and defending this shithead simply on the grounds that he is, SHOCK, a black male. Someone pass the Kool-Aid.

Wow, the discussion here reminds me how racist white New York is. Not that the discussion would have to be from there, but it's the kind of thing you do hear there, this super hostility to some unnamed force or maybe it's Al Sharpton who is defending criminals and in general keeping the white man down. Only no one here was defending the criminal, including Al Sharpton. It's odd, Manhattanites have done negro removal on most of the island now, but they're still in love with the subway vigilante. But apparently only if the subway vigilante is some pasty faced, pretty creepy white man like Goetz, since this actual is a pretty cool citizen vigilante moment by almost anyone's standards. They "beat him up" until the cops arrived... HA!

You got a problem, punk? Well, do ya?

I believe Mr. Shaw is right ! If this guy was white would there be "Wall too Wall" coverage of the story ? I don't think so .

Both Devin and George are my personal heroes. If I could personally hug both of you, I would.
