Last Night's Action: Rodriguez Settles Into Hero Role

2007_04_arodhr.jpg

  • Yankees 8, Indians 6: All that talk of Alex Rodriguez's problems in important -- so-called "clutch" -- spots seems to be a thing of the past. So did the Yankees third baseman suddenly discover the ability to perform when it matters, or did people give him too hard a time to begin with? He doesn't seem to care. The Yankees entered the ninth inning down by four runs, and the first two men in the inning made out. Then they scored six runs. That they won despite that seems more amazing than that the winning homer came from Rodriguez, one of the two best players this decade. He appears headed for a season free of the scrutiny that the media unfairly applied last season.

  • Mets 11, Marlins 3: Everyone got in on this party. Carlos Beltran stole the show with a 4-for-6 night, but all nine Mets starters got a hit. That includes pitcher Orlando Hernandez, who struck out 10 to pick up the win. The Mets seem to be enjoying themselves in the National League East, and they return home to face the Braves for a three-game series starting Friday. They outscored the Marlins 20-5 over the two games in Miami.

Let's not forget Rodriguez is in a walk year basically - he can leave the Yankees after this season and he can look for a bigger contract.
Usually the last year of a contract players suddenly do what they were paid to do as opposed to just padding their numbers.

Also - I had no idea that its October already and its the postseason.

Make no mistake - if you're going to take on a hilariously ridiculous salary for a player, there's only one acceptable outcome - Championship.

With that said... Go team! No pressure!

Hudson, though he's carried the team so far this season, Rodriguez is only one player. With his ridiculous salary, he needs to perform in the postseason, but it's unfair to demand a championship from him alone.

This is actually not borne out by statistics.

And I agree with #2, it's only April. Forget about the postseason, let's see how this series with the Sux goes.

Personally, I think A-Rod is back on the Juice.

SP,
what statistics are those?
Try running them again, but limiting your data to players who are ridiculously overpaid.
Since he obviously cared so much about the team and the fans in Texas, is it so much of a stretch to think he's more motivated by a chance to make more $$ than a chance to win one for the city?

"He appears headed for a season free of the scrutiny that the media unfairly applied last season."

Who is the author - Scott Boras? While I am happy to see him hitting some clutch homers in April, I think the media and fans were justifiably critical of a highly-paided, highly hyped player who did nothing when it really mattered...October.

beltran and rodriguez are just getting settled in new york. it's going to be a banner year for both of them.

here's the link "statman". It's a paper by an economics student at Princeton Univeristy called "A Test of Additional Effort Expenditure in the "Walk
Year" for Major League Baseball Players". It involves some math and it's 15 pages long, so if you actually are not interested in the facts and are just being a smarmy prick, don't bother.

If this is going to be a banner year for Beltran, WTF was last year?
