Coupon Clipper - Nutella

The Coupon Clipper scours the specials for the best deals in New York's big grocery stores.

2007_04_nutella2.jpgBecause of the Nor'easter and unseasonably cool weather, fresh veggies weren’t sounding very good this week. We needed comfort food, and that’s when we found Nutella, 2 for $5 at Fairway. That’s $2.50 a piece, nearly a dollar cheaper than normal. For those not versed in the ways of the European staple, it’s a hazelnut spread, very much the consistency of smooth peanut butter, but laced with chocolate and lots and lots of sugar. Kobe Bryant loves it, and so do we.

What to do with it? There are sites detailing the myriad of uses for this remarkable spread, whether that’s banana hazelnut empanadas, chocolate-hazelnut ravioli, or Nutella crepes.

2007_04_nutella3.JPGThey all sounded dashing, but we couldn’t think of any better way than to slather it on two pieces of bread. Toast the bread, saute the whole sandwich in a pan, or use the Panini maker (a.k.a. George Forman) to give you those lines. Of course, even that seems a little too highbrow sometimes, in which case we definitely recommend the use of a spoon to scoop out the desired quantity. Just lick it off. But try not to double dip. According to the official Nutella website FAQ under “I like to eat Nutella out of the jar with a spoon. Is that OK?”, double dipping “reduces the shelf life of the product.” Plus it’s gross.

How do you use your Nutella?

best used on nipples, clitori, and last but definitely not least, the chocolate-hazelnut starfish supreme. whipped cream optional.

Man, if it weren't for Nutella, I never would have financially survived the summer I studied in Ireland. Ate that on bread for upwards of two meals a day.

oh man, I made triple decker nutella sandwiches for a while, then realized I was addicted, and have gone cold turkey since january.

In the US, Nutella is packed full of trans fat. Avoid.

A decent alternative, if you're not allergic to peanuts, is "Dark Chocolate Dreams", which is peanuts and (surprise) dark chocolate.

I used to like Nutella because it was European and therefore *fancy* but it's really just junk food crap.

The picture of the red hook fairway was flooded before in a previous post. Is the red hook fairway swamped still? also, I use nutella for my rodent traps. Rats love the stuff. I catch one rodent with peanut butter every 2 days but with nutella I can catch about 3 a night.

I call bullshit on that first post.
Nutella is too thick to be spread smoothly onto skin.

Double-dipping is bad for shelf life because your mouth bacteria gets in there and grows. Another reason why not to re-use those water bottles without washing them with soap each time.

CP, I can vouch for post #1 - in fact that's the only way I've ever 'enjoyed' Nutella.
