Anyone who understands the PC nature of US media knows the Hampton Heights victim is white. If she were black the media would have reported the fact so as not to be seen inciting potential racial conflict. And, yes, it is a shame that Al Sharpton only chimes in on racial events when it suits his separatist "blacks as victims" agenda. Racism cuts both ways.

As always, instead of focusing on the real issue, all of us get carried away. The real problem here is that we are forgetting how to take care of ourselves. We keep walking with IPods ignoring everything that is happening around us. We don't understand that by eliminating the undesired stimuli that we receive from the outside, we are also eliminating stimuli that are vital for our safety. Instead of focusing on who and why and what race, we should focus on how to prevent things like this from happening again.

I live on Hamilton Terrace, and there are posters all over now. There were newstrucks on the street last night, too. Police cars are patrolling almost constantly. There's also a residents' meeting tonight. I assure you, we're on it. We won't let this just slip by. Gothamist, however, is still letting all sorts of disgusting, racist comments onto this website.

I live closeby as well and saw no posters. However, all my neighbors are talking about it and they've beefed up the locks on the front doors. I'm disappointed in the lack of posters but I can't blame the neighborhood. I used to live on the UWS and never experienced the sense of community there that I do in Hamilton Heights. If I want to see flyers about this, *I* should probably take initiative to put them up. It is MY community, no?

You know what's really upsetting - I live very close to the crime scene and I've seen ONE wanted/warning poster in the area. If I hadn't read about this on gothamist, I wouldn't have known about it- though I'm usually relatively careful, I'm going to be much more so from now on. After feeling pretty safe in this neighborhood for the past couple of years I hadn't realized how much I'd let my guard down until now. I feel absolutely awful for this poor woman. And I'm very upset that it appears more isn't being done in the neighborhood to catch this very violent, very dangerous criminal and to protect the young women in the neighborhood (which is at a college campus no less). You would think the best chances would be right after the attack. This is very frightening - enough to make me want to move...

Shouldn't Al Sharpton be concerned about this, regardless of whether or not the vicitim is black, white, asian, hispanic, etc? He was so concerned over women's self-esteem over three words, yet he cared nothing about the hell the 3 lacrosse players went through for a year. Fucking niggers, and I'm black. Black culture is despicable, and although the Al Sharpton and Jesse Jacksons may speak for 95% of blacks (we are not African-Americans!), they don't speak for 100%!

Dear Gothamist Editors, I really enjoy reading this site, but the nauseatingly racist comments that foul practically every post, no matter what the subject, have become out of control. I don't know what the solution is; maybe some sort of selection process that still allows for anonymity, à la Gawker? It's an unfortunate fact that there will always be bigots, but there must be a way to prevent them from polluting this site. Why indulge them in such vile provocation?

The reality of black criminality cannot be ignored forever. It is not 1964 anymore. It's time for this to stop. Blacks have to control themselves. We cannot continue on this path, or someday severe violence will break out towards them. Especially now that we have other minority groups in this city. Every other race HATES black people. When stuff like this happens in LA, Mexican gangs go on a rampage shooting every black man they can see. Sooner or later, something like that will happen here. This is pretty scary, especially since I live nearby. It's a quiet neighborhood; this is truly shocking. The perpetrator and the other guy (the one who beats up old ladies) are pure evil. The most severe punishment for them both, I say. If they are ever caught. Best wishes to the young woman. I don't normally pray, but I'm praying for her.

The thing is, when stuff happens to white people, the media is often all over it-- for example, think Jon Benet, that Mississippi girl who disappeared or the Scott Peterson case. Things like that happen to people of color, too, but all too often the media pays little attention. We don't know what race the victim was.

I completely disagree that this is a race thing. Although it is unfortunately true that the media inflate the importance of crimes against pretty blondes, this specific incident is singular because of the horrible brutality of the crime.

People like Sharpton make a big issue out of violence when it involved racial issues and therefore suits their agendas. They remain curiously silent, however, when there is an act of violence that doesn't involve racial issues. If you're concerned about crime and violence, speak out against all crime and violence, not just selective incidents.

Um, news flash...you dont know if the woman was black or not, so I dont understand the whole Al Sharpton thing-unless you have Tourette's Syndrome or are just a knee jerk bigot troll. On topic: I live in Hamilton Heights and reading about this is really freaking me out. It seems like a decent neighborhood but like a lot of places uptown, that changes perceptibly from block to block. Sometimes you just see people hanging out on the corner doing nothing, and that by itself freaks me out-Ive walked past that intersection (141 @ Hamilton) and yeah, it's dicey and you look into the apartment lobbies and they dont all look choice. But there are nicer places on Convent and Amsterdam. I think the only type of person who could commit a crime like this is mentally deranged-I have to believe that or what little faith I have in humanity will cease to exist. I'm praying for that woman.
