Police Still Searching For Hamilton Heights Rapist

2007_04_hamheights.jpgPolice are still looking for a man who raped and tortured a 23-year-old woman in her apartment on Hamilton Terrace off West 141st Street Friday night through Saturday afternoon. The attacker had tied up the woman and set her apartment on fire when he left, but Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, "It appears she was able to escape as a result of the fire. She was tied, and the flame was used by her to break the bond."

He added that the attack was "particularly vicious," with the rapist not only sexually assaulting her, but he "burned her with scalding water and chemicals...and slit her eyelids," according to the Daily News. A neighbor told the NY Times it seemed that she was tied with electrical cords and pillowcases. She is in stable but serious condition.

The grandson of another building tenant said that when he smelled smoke in the building, he ran to the superintendent's basement office. Ronald Ward said the super was helping the woman, who kept saying, "I got raped! I got raped!" The News reports the woman is a student at Columbia's School of Journalism; neighbors tell the Post the woman was "new to the building" and "moved in over her dad's objections for fear for her safety."

The police say the attack occurred around 11:30PM on Friday, when the man followed her into the building and elevator, and forced his way into her apartment, leaving at 4:30PM Saturday. He is described as a black man, around 6'1" and 180 pounds, bald with a goatee and a scar on his abdomen; people are urged to call Crimestoppers (800-577-TIPS) with more information.

Oh goodie...I came upon this post while searching "hamilton heights" in google. I'm looking to move there. Since this was the 12th search result, I think this does not bode well for this area.

Anyone who understands the PC nature of US media knows the Hampton Heights victim is white.

If she were black the media would have reported the fact so as not to be seen inciting potential racial conflict.

And, yes, it is a shame that Al Sharpton only chimes in on racial events when it suits his separatist "blacks as victims" agenda. Racism cuts both ways.

As always, instead of focusing on the real issue, all of us get carried away. The real problem here is that we are forgetting how to take care of ourselves. We keep walking with IPods ignoring everything that is happening around us. We don't understand that by eliminating the undesired stimuli that we receive from the outside, we are also eliminating stimuli that are vital for our safety. Instead of focusing on who and why and what race, we should focus on how to prevent things like this from happening again.

"And all his victims who happen to be white."

    Racist!

I haven't seen any reports on this since they came out with the sketches. Has anyone heard anything about the search for the guy? Are they going to catch him or what? I'm surprised this has just kind of passed on by...

I live on Hamilton Terrace, and there are posters all over now. There were newstrucks on the street last night, too. Police cars are patrolling almost constantly. There's also a residents' meeting tonight. I assure you, we're on it. We won't let this just slip by.

Gothamist, however, is still letting all sorts of disgusting, racist comments onto this website.

I live closeby as well and saw no posters. However, all my neighbors are talking about it and they've beefed up the locks on the front doors.

I'm disappointed in the lack of posters but I can't blame the neighborhood. I used to live on the UWS and never experienced the sense of community there that I do in Hamilton Heights. If I want to see flyers about this, *I* should probably take initiative to put them up. It is MY community, no?

    I hate nigers

You know what's really upsetting - I live very close to the crime scene and I've seen ONE wanted/warning poster in the area. If I hadn't read about this on gothamist, I wouldn't have known about it- though I'm usually relatively careful, I'm going to be much more so from now on. After feeling pretty safe in this neighborhood for the past couple of years I hadn't realized how much I'd let my guard down until now.

I feel absolutely awful for this poor woman. And I'm very upset that it appears more isn't being done in the neighborhood to catch this very violent, very dangerous criminal and to protect the young women in the neighborhood (which is at a college campus no less). You would think the best chances would be right after the attack. This is very frightening - enough to make me want to move...

For all you Liberals spouting your foolish cant, don't you realize that White Guilt can only go so far? We are well past the point of diminishing returns. Are not Afro-Americans to be judged by the content of their characters?

  • Black, not stupid.

    Re: BTR

Ironic how you despise Black culture, while using the n-word. This is precisely the type of "I'm black, I can get away with degrading blacks" culture and behavior that many people (both black and white, yourself included!) complain about. And the reason 'they' call black people hyopcritical.

    And I'm Black.

  • BTR

Shouldn't Al Sharpton be concerned about this, regardless of whether or not the vicitim is black, white, asian, hispanic, etc?

He was so concerned over women's self-esteem over three words, yet he cared nothing about the hell the 3 lacrosse players went through for a year.

Fucking niggers, and I'm black. Black culture is despicable, and although the Al Sharpton and Jesse Jacksons may speak for 95% of blacks (we are not African-Americans!), they don't speak for 100%!

D, I agree. I dont think having to register and have a permanent name to comment would hurt. And/or having a screener for the comments. It seems that's the way a lot of sites are going, I dont see why this one should be any different-I think it would improve it.

    Dear Gothamist Editors,

I really enjoy reading this site, but the nauseatingly racist comments that foul practically every post, no matter what the subject, have become out of control. I don't know what the solution is; maybe some sort of selection process that still allows for anonymity, à la Gawker? It's an unfortunate fact that there will always be bigots, but there must be a way to prevent them from polluting this site. Why indulge them in such vile provocation?

These postings are such a statement on bravery for the unknown. You go, john loo toilet, obviously a very brave character of not east asian descent! FACE!!! :)

  • xlx

Hey Eryximachus (no. 27): I hope they find the perpetrator real fast and lock him up in a nice small cell forever. With you.

  • John Loo Toilet

She wasn't Asian, or John Liu would have a comment about this.

I wonder what John Liu will have to say about the Virginia Tech shooter, who happens to be East Asian. And all his victims who happen to be white.

  • Charles

Why not go off on *men* in general-they are the ones that commit most of the crimes against women.

Eryximachus-I know I shouldnt feed the troll, but I get the impression that you dont have many people to talk to in real life.

  • Eryximachus

The reality of black criminality cannot be ignored forever. It is not 1964 anymore. It's time for this to stop. Blacks have to control themselves. We cannot continue on this path, or someday severe violence will break out towards them.

Especially now that we have other minority groups in this city. Every other race HATES black people.

When stuff like this happens in LA, Mexican gangs go on a rampage shooting every black man they can see. Sooner or later, something like that will happen here.

The entire black "leadership" is based here. It's time for a change, maybe this will be the catalyst.
