Mayor Mike Ramps Up Campaign Against Illegal Guns

2007_04_magv.jpgMayor Bloomberg missed the Second Avenue Subway groundbreaking yesterday morning because he was in Cincinnati to unveil the latest part of his campaign fight illegal guns. And, yes, Ohio is a swing state.

The Mayors Against Illegal Guns group that the Mayor founded last year will be rolling out TV and Internet ads to, as the NY Times reports, "pressure Congress into rescinding the so-called Tiahrt amendment, a measure attached to spending bills each year since 2003 that bans the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from releasing gun-trace data, except to police officials and prosecutors working on a particular crime." Local law enforcement, therefore, is unable to see gun trafficking patterns in their areas.

Mayor Bloomberg said, "If Congress won't lead, then mayors will." And so will Mayor Mike's wallet: He's funding the ad biltz. A new website for the initiative, Protect Police, was launched, and here's one of the ads:

And here's the Mayors Against Illegal Guns website.

Second Amendment, that's why.

The money would be better used to fund higher-education for low-income mothers, so they can raise kids who have a chance at a better life, rather than leaving them unskilled and having to resort to drug trafficking, which is a business that controls their competition with guns.

i wish him luck with this. there is no reason why it should be so easy to obtain a lethal weapon. to the 1st poster, if those mothers (and fathers too) you speak of don't have a- the money to raise a child b- the ability to teach the child simple morality c- the desire to be involved with the child and discipline them and make sure they attend and graduate school as a youth , then really they shouldn't be having them now should they? i am sick of the victim mentality, it keeps everyone down.

[1]: Do your homework before spewing irrelevant bs about the second amemdment. This is not a second amendment issue, its about giving cops access to information that would be helpful in tracking down legal and illegal weapons, NOT about preventing people from legally purchasing and registering a weapon.

While your points about education are valid and good, providing good education is not mutually exclusive to the issue brought up by bloomberg, which is a good one.

nyc already prevents people, by and large, from legally owning handguns - the sullivan act was an interesting bit of legislation (mayoral assassination + anti italian hysteria = modern nyc gun laws). it's both costly and time-consuming, and forget having a CHL.

and if it weren't for the broad ownership of handguns and long guns in the u.s., you might have more of a point. in this case, seeing how utterly dimissive the current feds are of privacy and constitutional rights as a whole, a bit (or a whole lot) of paranoia in this case seems reasonable, if not downright sane. if the cops are spending time and money harassing a bunch of dudes on bicycles...etc etc and so forth.

that gun laws tend to violate the rights of the law-abiding is, of course, no shock to anyone familiar with how black markets work.

Yeah except that whole "Constitution" thing... but our government treats it like dirt... why shouldn't the rest of us, right?

I'm glad that Mike, who never has to soil himself to deal with people without an army of bodyguards, knows what's best for people who have to have undefended homes every day of their lives. He's really got our backs.
