Man Jumps to Death Off Empire State Building

2007_04_esbjump2.jpgA man killed himself by jumping from the 69th floor of the Empire State Building. The AP reports that the man jumped from a window in a law firm, and that the police responded when "a 911 caller reported seeing a leg on 33rd Street." It seems that the man's body hit a setback on the 30th floor, and the rest was found on the ledge. While 33rd Street was closed so the police could investigate, some building workers have taken photographs of the remains.

The AP says that the last suicide at the ESB was last year, when a man bought a ticket to the observation deck (86th floor), but jumped from a vacant office on the 66th floor (apparently more than 30 people have committed suicide since the ESB opened). And earlier this year, a judge found daredevil Jeb Corliss's attempt to jump off the ESB legal.

You know, you could always post a link with the warning and NSFW label. Otherwise it seems that you guys are tough enough to handle but your readers aren't.

The worst and most hateful example of the press deciding to withhold information from its readers/viewers has been the embargo of images of the 9/11 jumpers. "Oh no, the public can not see that. Americans are all crazy reactionaries and seeing those images will make them insanely angry against muslims. Thank goodness we, the guardians of the press, are so much more level headed."

If YOU want to see it search it out on your faggy sites like consumption junction.
some people don't want to see stuff like that. maybe you'll see your mother there.

When I was in Europe, the news would show the true carnage of what goes on every day in Iraq, on both sides. It was disturbing. Some was gut-wrenching. But I always thought that if Americans saw that on their filtered news, things would be different. The world is a dirty, scary, insane place sometimes - unless you live in the good ol' free USA.

Nice sweeping statements Len. European news is just as honest, forthright, shady, corrupt and manipulated as the USA. Don't fool yourself.

Wow, you're a real asshole. Hence the reason the guy said "Post a link and warning."

Here's the link, Your mother's on there, too.

I wasn't there, but I have a feeling the man actually killed himself by jumping, not after jumping, from the 69th floor.

Actually he did die AFTER jumping. The act of his body hitting the pavement killed him. The Jump itself was not enough to end his life. He was most likely still alive before hitting the ground AFTER jumping from the window.

hey someone good at math! assuming the guy was 200 pounds.. how long was his free fall between floor 69 and floor 30??

He never hit the pavement, as long as you want to get all stickler-detailed about it. At least be correct when being an ubercorrecty snotball.

69 floors - 30 floors = 39 floors

39 floors * 10 ft/floor = 390 ft

390 ft = (0.5)(32.15 ft/s^2)(t^2)

t^2 = 390 ft/16.075 ft/s^2

t^2 ≈ 25 s^2

t ≈ 5 s

v = 32.15 ft/s^2(5 s)

v ≈ 160 ft/s * (1 mile/5280 ft) * (3600 s / 1 hr) ≈ 110 mph

With a calculator I got:

t = 4.9254203994149455 s
v = 107.97417046499 mph

The weight of the individual wouldn't matter.

William: your calculations are incorrect -- you forgot to take into account the air friction. This is not a vacuum.
