U.N. Wants NYPD Abroad

2007_04_unlogo.jpgInteresting: The new United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-moon asked Mayor Bloomberg deploying NYPD officers on U.N. peacekeeping missions. The U.N. tells the AP that one of its priorities is to recruit international police for its peacekeeping missions, and a spokesperson said, "New York City has one of the most diversified police forces around."

The city has been unable to recruit enough police officers lately - the NYPD's low starting salary isn't helping - which makes it "unlikely" for the city to agree to to such a thing. Hmm, maybe if the U.N. encouraged its diplomats to pay parking tickets, water bills or pay taxes the city is suing over...

In other city-U.N. news, the city wants to build a new tower on Robert Moses Playground, which the community says is rare open space. At a community board meeting, the Sun reports the "city's newest proposal, however, gained more traction with the community" - it seems the city is trying to take residents' concerns into consideration.

HELL NO!

Any Mayor that agreed to that would be asking for a revolt. Our tax dollars pay for the cops to patrol our city not risk their lives in foreign lands. That's what armies are for.

when i think of the nypd, i hardly think of peacekeeping.
bad.idea.

yeah, the NYPD & the LAPD while we're at it...

I hear Chicago's got some bruisers too!

well it dew take a village. don't it.

They should just raise the pay of new recruits (and all officers) but do away with the retirement benefits. It would save the city a lot of $.
