On Sunday, there were a few reports of a motorcyclist who was critically injured during a hit-and-run in Brooklyn. Her name was not initially released, but now Monica Henk's family is speaking out because they have decided to take her off life-support. Henk's husband Dan, and he told the Daily News, "Her backpack was covered in blood. She was hit so incredibly hard that it shattered her helmet. I want to catch this guy. This is murder."
Friends have been updating Dan's website with information, and they sent us this email:
Local 26 year old artist Monica Henk was struck by a black SUV on the corner of Kent & Flushing Ave. in Brooklyn, New York at about 7am on Saturday, April 7th, 2007. She was riding her motorcycle and on the way to class at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. Her condition has steadily deteriorated, The family has decided to take her off life support. There is a $10,000 reward from Crimestoppers (800-577-TIPS), as well as a $6,000 reward raised by friends and family.
Police now believe it is a 95-97 Black Chevy S-10 Blazer. It is missing the front bumper from the accident, and one of the headlights was smashed out.

Here's a thought, cold-blooded as it may be:
Don't ride motorcycles.
This is so terrible; my heart goes out to her family.
On a related note: are there laws in NYC that say that bicyclists should wear helmets? My boyfriend doesn’t seem to think that a helmet is a necessity and I would love to prove him wrong (before he gets hurt)
NYS Motor vehicles requires all motorcycle riders to wear helmets and the headlight on at all times.
Bicycle riders need helmets if you're under 14.
I read she was wearing a helmet and she was hit so hard that her helmet shattered.
Here's a thought. Don't cross the street. Idiot.
The only bicyclists that need to wear helmets are children. Don't know the exact age, but parents can get a ticket if their kid isn't wearing one.
Spud, you're a grade A asshole.
Artist Monica Henk who used to tattoo at PURE and SACRED TATTOO, was in an accident on her motorcycle two nights ago with a hit and run SUV and is in extremely critical condition. She was dead on the scene, revived by EMS, but is completely unresponsive in a coma right now. She isn't breathing on her own, nor responding to touch or pain. The doctors say she is amongst the 90th percentile of people who do not make it. Her oxygen/blood level is at 17% right now and decreasing, as of midnight.
Her husband, Dan Henk, who also works at Pure part time, is putting together a reward fund for anyone who can help find the hit and run black SUV on the corner of Kent and Flushing in Brooklyn. I was just wondering if you could post this on on your pages to help raise a little money for the reward. Any donations should be made to dan@danhenk.com with "Monica Henk Charity Fund" in the subject. He's up to around $3500. Thanks a bunch, in advance.
Dan is a good friend of the bands and contributed a lot of artwork for Indecision t-shirts over the years. Please help if you can or at the very least, pass this on. THank you
Gee Spud, so constructive of you. please crawl back under your rock.
Here's a suggestion: don't run over motorcyclists with your frickin' SUV....
Murder it is.
Good one Spud Spudly
Here's another thought, STFU....
The driver would have been smarter to stick around the scene of the accident - odds are no charges would have been pressed.
I'm guessing when they find this person there will be a few more things he/she is wanted for...what an asshole.
Yeah, I've got some suggestions too:
- don't drive your car like an idiot (but how come it seems like SUV's encourage people to drive even worse?)
- make Flushing avenue crummy again (ever since parts of it have been repaved people seem to drive even worse... I feel like every morning I see someone cross the double yellow and pass on the left)
- Bikers: be as careful as you can be.
Please, please, please, I hope they find this a--hole.
"Here's a thought, cold-blooded as it may be:
Don't ride motorcycles."
How about banning SUVs instead, genius?
Afer all, they cause "invulnerable driver syndrome" which results in their operators driving like lame bulls in a china shop (on meth).
If it wasn't a motorcyclist it would have been a pedestrian, a Mini or a school bus that took the hit from this bastard.
Hey, guys, don't feed the troll. That's all Spud is.
here are some thoughts crud crudly:
1. don't leave the scene of a crime.
2. watch where the fuck you are driving.
i ride a bike in the city and it's an eyeopener to how blind most drivers are while they (a) chat on the phone, (b) pick their butt, or (c) whatever it is they do when they should be paying attention to the light they just ran through.
my heart goes out to the family. we take risks in life and we all have our own calculus of which risks we deem worthy of taking. for some, it's riding a motorcycle, for other it's something else.
