Hot Sake - Food News You Can Use

2006_03_food_Hot Sake2.jpg- Jim Leff has built a Google mash-up of his favorite “obscure street food in Easter Jackson Heights.” In related news, The Arepa Lady is on MySpace? Fake or real, you decide.

- We have always loved Alex Garcia's food, from back in the day by Douglas Rodriguez's side opening Patria to his excellent nook of a spot at Erizo Latino in SoHo where he pioneered the Turkey T-Bone. That being said, we were happy to see his recipe for a Cubanito sandwich that replaces the “hero loaf” with flatbread – and even happier to find that he was not in jail and in fact sidestepped it all together.

- Not to spread the ill-will, but speaking of chefs named Alex - a source tells us that Urena is on the verge of sunsetting. Get there now if you want to sample some of the most well-prepared and intricately composed plates in the city. Shame if this is as dead-on and current as the source claimed.

- Speaking of word on the street, while we were skeptical as recently as Sunday, it looks like ramps are just a few days away. Prepare for a proliferation on the menus of fancy pants chefs everywhere by tax day.

- How does adding butter and pine nuts make humus Palestinian? Please share your thoughts in the comments.

- Jennifer Leuzzi gets extra literary-like on us, dig the new graphic on the site.

WholeFoodsHousten_HotSake.jpg- It has been a long time since we have seen a product so unnecessary and vile looking, Pre-diced, thick cut prosciutto.

- With all the resources and planning that went into the opening of the new Whole Foods Bowery you think they would have gotten the spelling of Houston right on their labels. Come on guys, you keep preaching the local slant, but this is way worse than mispronouncing it like the Texas city. No one noticed it was spelled "Housten" at the whole store all week long?

Got some Hot Sake for us? Send it our way, credit will be given...or not if you prefer.

Are you kidding? The Arepa Lady's myspace page has been widely known (and known to be authentic) for over a year. Seriously you Manhattan types need to get your heads out of your asses once and a while and explore this city.

Why wouldn't it? Every culture int he region seems to have its own take on this ancient dish -- if people in palestine customize theirs with butter and pine nuts, how is that noteworthy??

Spelling advice, here? Oh, Come on!

Charles is right. It's run by a family member (nephew?), and has been around (and widely-known) for a while now.

Forget spelling of Houston. The cashiers at Whole Foods have no idea how to ring up anything (god bless 'em). I paid my bill for random charges just to get the hell out of dodge. Complete cluster fuck that store. PS TOO MUCH $$.

You've got to be joking, making fun of spelling errors. This site is sick typos. If you want to be regarded as a serious news source, you need at the very least a proofreader, if not a copy editor.
