its a travesty that shiner bock did not win out. the only other thing thats more tragic is that shiner is not sold this far north.

shiner bock crushes brooklyn lager
shiner hefeweizen tops brooklyn weisse
shiner blonde beats brooklyn pilsner

make your way south, and figure this out.

Sam Adams Boston Lager is awful. I can't imagine why people like it. Their seasonal ales are fantastic though.

Saranac makes a Caramel Porter as part of their Christmas 12-pack (and only in that, which drives me crazy) that is the 2nd best beer I've ever had, behind the Thomas Jefferson Ginger Honey Ale Sam Adams put out as one of their Patriot pack last year.

Anyone who writes off beer that's sold in a supermarket, then drinks PBR to be ironic and hip is an idiot and not worthy of my time.

I don't think Brooklyn Lager and Sam Adams taste alike at all. I love BL, but my favorite beer out of BB is their Weisse.

I love Brooklyn Lager....and Heineken is kind of my go-to bar beer when there isn't anything interesting to drink. I don't think BK Lager is generally associated with a hipster image: it has to be one of the most readily available non-monstrous-company beers in NYC. I'd venture to say I see more Brooklyn Lager on tap than I do Sam Adams.
On other note, I am a total sucker for Brooklyn Brewery's marketing and frequently enjoy their Pennant '55 Ale while watching Yankees games.

I usually don't drink Tsing Tao but at BYOB place in chinatown we bought some cans at a market and it was very clean and fresh tasting. It really hit the spot. They were a little over a buck each. Maybe the cans were the thing.
Worst beer lately? a six pack of St. Paulie girl bought at a Rite Aid.

Yeah, I gotta jump on the "Brooklyn Lager isn't actually a good beer" bandwagon here. I swear I've run into so many people who swear by it, and I think the only reason is the name. Only thing worse is Heineken.

db, bill bixby here.
I'd rather not say but he thought Saranac is not obscure enough as it's being sold in supermarkets. It's too common.
Or, maybe he knows his customers very well in that it would not sell in a microbrew pub.
Anyway, I've found a new "cheap" beer, the High Falls Brewery J.W. Dundee line, $7 a 12 pack. From the makers of Genesee ale.

Huh. It's not even the best beer brewed in Brooklyn.

That would be Six Points.

I call Bullshit, Hulk. How exactly did your hipster "friend" "piss on" Saranac for not being "hip enough"?

I think you overextended your exaggeration a bit too far. I don't like hipsters either, but no one, particularly not a hipster, is going to say "yeah, your beer sucks, it's not cool enough". Sorry.

PS- I'm just looking for a fight because the Phillies are terrible...again.

OH no, you make HULK, I mean, indie beer hipsters mad! We like microbrews.
I remember telling my friend about my Saranac variety packs and he pissed on them being not indie hip enough.
I can get 12 packs of Saranac on my way upstate at Hannaford for under $10, sometimes less when they are on sale. Same with the Sam Adams variety packs. $9 for 12 when on sale.

Yeah, the really ironic thing is that Brooklyn Lager and Sam Adams are the exact same recipe. How did one beat the other in a head-to-head match when they're the same exact beer? Simple. Brooklyn's cool. Sam Adams is corporate.

Saranac should have been winner. The interesting thing is that Matt's Brewery in Utica actually brews both of the beers. Brooklyn contracts with the upstaters to make the beer.

[2], you're absolutely right, but we figured we'd cut the WaPo some slack 'cause when one calls up the Bk. Brewery on mapquest, Greenpoint pops up as the nearest neighborhood label, only seven blocks away. That's less confusion many NYC residents would have displayed, and at least the paper got the borough right, even if it is printed on the bottle.

Saranac has been one of my favorite beers for years. It not only tastes great but it's also not expensive, going for around six bucks a six-pack, with 12-packs sometimes to be had for $10.
