Sippin’ on Gin and Juice

cup.jpgMaybe Snoop Dogg knew a thing or two about how to mix a drink. You may not expect the botanical aromas and flavors in gin to combine seamlessly with fruit juices, but somehow it just works. We know the gin purists out there are pounding their heads against the keyboard right about know. Don’t go on, we will only be bastardizing the gin to a much greater extent from here on, forward. (Don’t worry, we’re the same way about scotch).

Now I got me some Seagram’s Gin, just to keep with Snoop Doggs’ directive. Any gin will do but since we are mixing it with juices it doesn’t make sense to waste our money on the really expensive stuff. We started experimenting with different recipes and juices. We used citrus juices to counter the botanicals in some cases and added mint to accentuate them in others. After working though much of the bottle, we acquired a new love for this blend, and pretty much for everything in the room (Warning: they go down a little too easily. Just saying.) Here are a few cocktails that sparked the romance.

Gin Smash

1 tbsp Sugar
4 sprigs of fresh mint
2 measures of gin

Dissolve the sugar in a little water in the cocktail shaker. Add the mint and, using a muddler or any blunt object, bruise and press the juices out of the mint leaves. Add crushed ice and the gin. Shake well and strain into a tumbler filled with ice. Garnish with mint leave.

Tod’s Cooler
2 measures of gin
2/3 measure of crème de cassis
2/3 measure of lemon juice
soda water

Half fill a tall glass with ice. Add the first three ingredients and top off with soda. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Honolulu

1 measure of gin
¼ measure of pineapple juice
¼ measure of orange juice
¼ measure of lemon juice

Ok, so this one’s a shot, but it’s a good one to add to the repertoire. Shake all the ingredients and strain into a shot glass.

Bee’s Knees

1 ¼ measure of gin
1 tsp honey
¼ measure of lemon juice

Shake the ingredients very well with ice to integrate the honey and strain into a cocktail glass.

Snoop, thanks for the tips. We’ll be mixing up these drinks for our friends, but not for the ones who ain’t chipped in.

Pond Water, a personal favorite of mine:

1 part Odwalla Superfood juice
1 part sparkling water (or tonic water if you like that nasty shit)
1 part Bombay Sapphire gin

This is a great post. Now if only the bartender was knowledgeable enough to know the drink and make it right. AND I think fresh mint needs to be a requirement at every establishment...and cucumber...

Where the hell have you all been ? That has been out for decades !!! Catch-up already

I think Snoop is actually a barback at Little Branch now. Part of a work release thing.
