"just as selfish as your "you have yours, it's not fair, screw you" attitude. it is what it is. grow up." It's bad economic policy. It's inefficient and makes real estate cost more for everyone. It disincentivizes landlords to make capital improvements. I can afford a nice apartment, but some of my friends live in 2 bedroom apartments with 2 or 3 other people and STILL pay more than most people who benefit from rent control. How is this fair? It's essentially parasitic. People who benefit from rent control are like fleas on a dog.

Only been to Chumley's once, thought it was pretty cool though, I'll have to make sure I go again before it gets demolished. Hopefully a brick won't fall in my beer though, heck of a way to ruin a good beer.

Something's definitely wrong with the way this building is being handled. There was a chimney collapse last summer that ruined two floors and they've had a "stop work order" sign on the site for months now.

This highlights yet another interesting side effect of rent control. The tenants have more rights than the landowner, so much so that they were unable to repair the building, and now it will probably be demolished and no one can live there. Rent control is ultimately selfish. To all of these people with their "I got mine, screw you" attitude: please, just die already.

NY1 is reporting that DOB says the building isn't in danger of collapsing. Though it does make one wonder why they evacuated half of the area. Chumley's is/was cool. It was a big Beat hangout and tried to keep the vibe going. I like/liked it a lot. Oh, and BTW, once again, the first place I find out what's going on (except for the street) is the Gothamist gang. Nice job, guys. I can deal with the typos.

you know, chumley's had an interesting space and its too bad if the building gets torn down, but it really was kind of an awful bar.

landmark status should have been applied for years ago, this way the owners would have to renovate instead of demolish.
