Mysteries of the Orient Revealed...Wait

2007_04_nyubrownstone.JPG

The latest issue of Brownstone, NYU's magazine devoted to minority issues, is out and it's all Asians, all the time.

You can learn if how Stern classes has more Asians, it's harder. Or how editors canceled a photo shoot that would have involved Asian stereotypes (the nerd, the girl who only dates white guys, and the FOB). Also the spread of yellow fever is examined (though there's no mention of The World of Suzie Wong).

Bonus: NYU College Republicans President Sarah Chambers ("awfully pretty") is profiled - you may remember Chambers from such stunts as the "Illegal Immigrant Hunt." Here are the April 2006 issue and the October 2006 issue of Brownstone. And can any any NYU students or graduates reading tell us how popular Brownstone is?

my asian girl friends tell me that hooking up with a white guy is a sign of success...i never understood that

- though I'll have to admit, as a caucasian woman, if given the choice, asian men would be on the bottom of my dating list, don't know why...aesthetics maybe?

Asian parents want their kids to work in finance??? Since when is that news.
My undergrad classes at Stern (several years ago) were almost all asian. There were prob 5 white kids (males) per class and even less Latino/Black.

If you're wondering how popular Brownstone is, I've never heard of it before right now.

I always chucked the brownstone insert that came with Washington Square News.

Why is Stern so Asian? I think that opens up a pandora's box of thoughts and debates - how Asian Americans view education, why is the black/latino population little to non-existant, the also seemingly significantly sized groups of Jewish-Americans, Russians, Indians, etc., why do Asians seem to flock to Ivy Leagues (or other big universities), is the college board/admissions trying to "balance out" the Asians, etc.

How popular is Brownstone? I'm with Ricky. I graduated in '05 and just learned of its existence from you, Gothamist.

Isn't this incredibly racist? I'm caucasian, and I swear I thought this was a parody at first. I thought NYU was bleedingly liberal. And add me to the list of people who'd never heard of this rag before.

I went to nyu and never heard of it

user-pic

Brownstone is about as popular as Sarah Chambers (pres of college republicans)

user-pic

you think there are a lot of asians at NYU?!?

lol, try Berkley, UCLA, Irvine or Davis...they make up 50% of the student body

in fact, if you apply as an asian to any of those schools, it goes against you

I've read the paper a lot of times, but this is the first time I've checked out a Brownstone. I usually just chuck it.

"You can learn if how Stern classes has more Asians, it's harder."

or,

"You can learn that Stern classes are more difficult if there are more asian students enrolled."

Seriously, that first sentence is just painful reading.

"You can learn if how Stern classes has more Asians, it's harder."

Jeebus, please get an editor, or check your grammar before you submit something.

Uh, I hate to blow up this post, but Howard Stern is white and Jewish.

Secondly, 'You can learn if how Stern classes has more Asians, it's harder.' Hmph. I'm guessing this poster was NOT in one of those harder English classes with said Asians.

user-pic

What is FOB? I google'd it and itcame back as Friends of Bill, etc

user-pic

They don't have English classes at Stern. Those are taken at the College of Arts and Sciences with the rest of the students (aka, the whites, latinos, everyone else).

user-pic

Max, you're joking, right? FOB means "fresh off the boat".

www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fob

user-pic

Max,

FOB = Fresh Off the Boat

Brownstone = not very popular at all.

Asian girls and women are the most socially mobile, as far as "moving up" and being accepted by the greater white society, of all female-male minorities of color. Naturally, they gravitate towards the "better" culture. Life is better, easier, and as one post-er said, is a sign of success.

Negative stereotypes of Asian males in this western world is neverending. Its racism (while very different of course from those of Blacks and Hispanics) operates on so many levels and layers. Its persecutors are white, other non-Asian AND also Asians (those asian girls who date those white guys and asian guys too).

#9:

in fact, if you apply as an asian to any of those schools, it goes against you

Actually, California voters outlawed Affirmative Action in 1996, so admission to those schools is not based on race. (Which might be why they are 50% + Asian)

That being said, this magazine is pretty silly.

So does this mean that asiophilia is no longer considered a horrible crime?

I got an MA from NYU in 1994 and I've never heard of the Brownstone either (maybe it didn't exist then, though).

Also: I'm involved with recruiting and an investment bank and can tell you: ALL the top business schools, grad and undergrad, have high percentages of Asian students -- FOB and home-grown.

when's the white fever issue coming out. I'm not attracted to asian women at all but boy do you have to beat them off with a stick.

brownstone is better now but the paper has fallen since the new editor in chief alvin chang (an asian!) took over from a white girl!

race indeed

What's the allure of Asian women? Why are Asian people so academically ambitious? I think brownstone shouldn't have pulled up short at the end, and should've just slapped "Want To Learn Some Ancient Chinese Secrets?" on the cover.

It sold detergent 30 years ago. No reason it wouldn't sell jackassery today.

Actually, FOB stands for F@cks Only Blacks. And if it doesn't, it should cause its a valid category.

I heard oriental woman have it sideways.

If you spin an NYU student around, will he become disoriented?

currently a third year undergrad and had heard the name of the mag but never once seen an issue and definitely woulndn't have been able to tell you a thing about before today...

user-pic

What's the allure of Asian women?

Because Asian women (sweeping generalization and not at all applicable to everyone) will still stay home and raise a family. American women won't. This is unquestionably a stereotype.

Some men still want a wife, not a business partner, and like the company of women who don't find that statement insulting. There are entire websites devoted to why American men don't want to marry American women.

I think the white men like asian women because they think they'll be better wives thing isn't really the case anymore. It's pretty much all about the looks in my opinion.

Tell me though, what's up with all the indie rock/hipster boys going after asian girls? i swear every other couple is white guy, asian girl, and i just don't get it, and frankly, it's kind of annoying.

user-pic

Asian women hate themselves so they go out with White dudes. White dudes love pussy any way they can get it so they take it. simple. Thank god the asians that go out with white dudes are high maintainence Princesses. last time I checked there were 52 percent females in the world. Just fuck whomever you want.

user-pic

If anyone bothered to read the first 5 words of the issue, you'd see that it says IT'S THE SECOND ISSUE, which might explain why nobody's heard of it. Maybe.

I'm a (successful, attractive) white woman and I think Asian guys are hot. Just wanted to put that out there. I wish more Asian guys felt confident about approaching white women, honestly. There: I said it.

Maybe the second issue of the year. This certainly isn't the second issue of it ever.

Yea....I'm sure all the hipster college students and finance guys dating asian women out there are looking to get married and settle down with a traditional wife. It's because they're looking to get laid and asian chicks are finally sick of dating asian guys.

Asian women are on the scene because as a population, they've finally caught up with the mainstream in terms of making themselves look good, going out, and being liberal with dating other races. Not to mention that white guys can pull significantly hotter tail from asians than from white chicks.

Also, as an Chinese man, I'm going to be the first to say that asian guys are the biggest bunch of posers and pussies anywhere. Even the ones that do work hard/are successful don't get respect. I wouldn't date them either if I was a white woman.

user-pic

#35 white girl,
Thanks for your post. I, for one as an Asian guy, appreciate the comment. Yes, I wish there were more of you women out there who feel the same (white, asian or whatever) and more Asian guys confident with themselves. I was approached by my white woman friend and we ended up dating.

I think the title for "why is stern so asian?" racist. Why can't stern be so asian? If they wrote "Why is Stern so black?" They'd have Al sharpton at their front door. Self hating Asians.

Oh hell, they're only hyping this non-issue to sell copies of their stupid rag. (Kinda like Jen only posted this to generate more hits for Gothamist). Race fetishes are soooo '90's (Well, maybe the Midwestern hipster transplants are only just caching up, but whatever).
As far as looks go, I can't understand how Asian guys are NOT considered hot, since most Western male models try to bite their style all the time. Are girls that stupid they won't even glance at anyone who's not a Brad Pitt clone? No wonder chicks my age always bitch & moan about how there's "no good men out there."
Not to mention how (depending on the specific country of course) a LOT of Asian cultures put a heavy emphasis on education, family values and respect. But this whole "marrying for upward mobility" concept sounds incredibly stupid to me anyway.

I'm an Asian NYU student (junior), and I never even knew Brownstone existed.

I know about Brownstone but I suspect it's only because I study journalism at NYU..

Talk about a self hating Asian. Mike, dude, if you find that women aren't dating you because you think it's because you're Asian you're wrong. It's because you're such bitter jaded individual who refuses to lighten up. That's a major turn off for any women of any race. Dude, serious, try resolving those issues at a therapist session it'll do you a world of good.

"Jeebus, please get an editor, or check your grammar before you submit something."

She IS THE EDITOR... I think we see the problem now :)

This issue was the first that I've heard of or read. The ninja restaurant article was cool.

It's probably true that most NYU students haven't heard of Brownstone. But it's also true that most NYU students don't read.

Brownstone has only been around for a few years (started in 2003 or 2004, I think) but has attracted some well-known writers. In 2004, Toure (contributing editor at Rolling Stone, hosts a show on BET) wrote a few articles for Brownstone.

To get revenge, I'll only date white women.
