Extra, Extra

  • Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: A Large Sink Hole at 187th Pl. and Jamaica Ave. in Queens, a Serious Multi-Vehicle Accident on 125th and Lenox Ave. in Manhattan, and Bank Robbery at 178th St. and Hillside Ave. in Queens.
  • Podpeople are invading the city! 800 podcasters to descend upon Manhattan for PodCampNYC.
  • Queens DA Richard Brown is leading the charge to bring the death penalty back to New York State.
  • The Federal Reserve Bank of New York projects more jobs for NYC next year. Bonus points for guessing the newswire byline in bold at the top of this good-news piece. Hint: it's Bloomberg.
  • Small children and exposed wiring are a bad combination in a Brooklyn shopping mall.
  • A homeless man standing on a subway platform at the Rockefeller Center station–Top of the Rock!–yesterday evening suddenly jumped in front of an incoming V train. The man survived by sheltering himself in the trough between rails and, presumably, not meeting the death stares of annoyed commuters.
  • The cost of construction in the city could rise with the adoption of a new building code.
  • A Yonkers woman loses custody of her five children just as cops locate her missing 11-year-old son, who had walked away from the panhandling spot she forced him to take in front of a grocery store.
  • Poor Londonist! The British government is installing public CCTV cameras that not only watch every bad thing you do, but will then yell at you to stop.

Beware of the pod people!

"The unidentified 38-year-old man was standing on the platform at 6 p.m. when he suddenly said "bye" to a woman and made a dash for the tracks, according to a witness. "

More like "see ya later", asshole. Next time get it right.

What kinda idiot decides to kill himself and then saves himself?. Where's the frigging commitment man?.

I think it's pretty screwed up to add on "and, presumably, not meeting the death stares of annoyed commuters" -- if it were a "normal" guy, you wouldn't have written that. But because it is an expendable, crazy homeless dude, it's merely an inconvenience to commuters.

I guess in the mad rush of thoughts going through this guys mind, He realized death is not the answer .

Wow.

"...death stares of annoyed commuters."
"Next time get it right."
"What kind of idiot... saves himself?"

How is it possible that you've forgotten this is a terrified and confused person?

I agree, man. I'm guilty of my share of slightly insensitive humor, but that was outright unnecessary.

Sinkholes in Queens??? What's this city comming to ! I hope no one got hurt .
