  • Today on Gothamist Newsmap: A ceiling collapse at Bowling Green/Battery Park on the subway's 4 line this morning, a bank robbery at 206th St. and Bainbridge Ave. in the Bronx, and a report of a missing child at Franklin Ave. in Brooklyn.
  • Imminent end of an era as the actual physical floor of the NYSE gets quieter daily.
  • Original "Buffy" Kristy Swanson to appear on L&O as Anna Nic a drug-addled blonde bombshell with a dead son. Link has priceless pic of Chris Noth looking for clues in Swanson's decolletage.
  • NY Mag's Daily Intelligencer notes the upcoming seasonal re-opening of Governor's Island and finds that a lot of people aren't very interested. (We went last year and can't wait to go again.)
  • Di Fara Pizza has re-opened after a brief run-in with the Health Department. Slice is there with hunger-inducing pictures.
  • When you absolutely have to get tickets to a sold out Yankees game: "call Red".
  • If the cops pull you over for failing to yield, your companion should stop what he's doing and you should zip up, especially once the cops are at your car window and they tell you to.
  • Surf City, NJ's the bomb! The Army Corps of Engineers is trying to remove all the ordnance it accidentally dumped there in time for beach season though.
  • Santacon leads to rekindled romance and wedding bells. NYTimes video.
  • It may be flattering to be named one of the 50 most powerful gay people in America, but apparently flaunting it on magazine covers is too gay.

All the good stuff on Governor's Island is off limits.

but apparently flaunting it on magazine covers is too gay.

Out magazine seems to never ever learn: most people want to be known by what they do as a profession not by whom they prefer to sleep with.

anderson cooper is gay?

Wow.... although 'Out' isn't exactly a respected prestigious news outlet (by a long shot), it's not exactly a great idea for anyone outside of the tabloid industry to put something like that on the cover (especially when it's based upon pure speculation)

"I understand why people might be interested. But I just don’t talk about my personal life. It’s a decision I made a long time ago, before I ever even knew anyone would be interested in my personal life. The whole thing about being a reporter is that you're supposed to be an observer and to be able to adapt with any group you’re in, and I don’t want to do anything that threatens that." -- Anderson Cooper

Governor's Island has to be one of the most overlooked treasures in New York. I ride past it every day on the Staten Island ferry and have always wanted to go but since it was always off limits it remains so in my head. I'm still not sure how to get there. How often doe sthat ferry run anyway?

Someone should really start promoting it. Once people start going maybe it will help them decide what to do with it. And if people don't go, maybe they should go ahead and turn it into a farm after all (that NYMag article this week was SO interesting!)

P.S. The Out magazine cover was just another idiocy from that irrelevant rag. They are obviously trying to stir up controversy and get some buzz at the expense of people who would rather just not be gay icons. Angry definitely summed it up best.

Jodie Foster is on the list as well. Where's Sam Champion or Mike Piazza? Sue Simmons?

The City runs a free ferry from the Battery Maritime Terminal to Governors Island, 5 times a day, in the summer. This year the ferry runs from June 2 to September 2. It's worth checking out.

When the opening date comes a little closer on the calendar, I'll be sure to post all the relevant information for visitors on Gothamist.

Until then, here's a great Group at flickr of Governors Island photos.

Please. The only people who spout that "keeping my life private" crap are closeted homos.
