Many people are abuzz about New York band A Brief Smile's recent interview on 92.3's morning show. The band went on the "JV and Elvis Show" to do an interview and have their song played. Instead they got called "gay" in every way possible, over and over again, and eventually the "pansy" bassist got kicked out of the on-air room. From the band's MySpace blog:
"also, we were on 92.3 on the "jv and elvis show" on tuesday. they said they enjoyed the music but chose to shout anti-gay slurs at us as way to make themselves feel better about the reality that nobody with half of a brain listens to regular radio anymore...or something...we didn't quite get it."
From the radio show's blog:
"Four members out of the five piece showed up today. Three of them were cool, one was a complete waste. He started off the interview saying he USED to listen to Krock (when the station was "good") and that he has never heard the Dog House program which is on "what once a week?". He also says he only listens to WFMU when he turns on the radio. And that's when his ass was kicked out of the studio. After JV continued his bashing of the pansy bass player, said pansy bass player returned to the studio (un-invited this time) to lambast JV for using the word "Faggy". He says he takes offense to that word, being a boy of mixed sexual tastes (that means he's half a fenook like Rudy), and more or less asked for an apology.
JV was having none of that ish! He explained that by "faggy" he means "dorky" and that his comments had nothing to do with the pansy bass players sexual preferences. Then he kicked him out again."
Oh, so if by "faggy" he meant "dorky", what did he mean by "faggot", "homo", "gay" and "a guy who takes it up the..."?
The Underrated Blog puts it best, stating: "I don't know when it became okay, or frankly in fashion, to use the word "faggot." But the more I hear people using it so loosely, the more disgusted with our culture I have become. The djs can say they used the word in a different connotation, but that does not make it okay. Regardless of John's sexual orientation, you cannot and do not use that word under any circumstance. The fact that these are young kids who were on the radio for the first time just makes it worse. These idiots (and I mean that sincerely) bullied and preyed for entertainment sake, and I find it morally, ethically, and socially unacceptable. What kind of country do we live in where people of this manner are paid to be heard? And the fact that people enjoy listening to this kind of talk is even worse."
Underrated also has an mp3 of the incident. Upon listening to it, between the abrasive tone and the unrelenting homophobia, it's not hard to realize why people don't listen to traditional radio anymore. One of the last few stations worth listening to, WFMU, weighs in on the incident as well.

Who's the bald guy with the queer stare? Could he be wearing any more makeup? Looks like *someone* is overcompensating.

One where the state isn't supposed to tell us what is and isn't ok to say.
Also one that doesn't slit your throat for being gay.
Righteous indignation noted, though. Please continue outlining how tolerant you are as long as everyone agrees with you.
They do broadcast radio? How quaint.
Some of you are already hitting on this, but this is further proof that broadcast is dead. It's sad, but true... when you start seeing more and more of this crap designed strictly to get attention... and less and less indignation because no one is paying attention to the radio anymore.
I can't remember the last time I actually listened to the radio. I think I turned it on when setting up my stereo six months ago. Not sure if it works.
Radio killed the radio star. Well done boys.
Sweet soul patch, dude.
Sweet penciled eyebrows too.
ona party rock
ok terrific!!!
Which one of them is the top? I'm curious.
The only things I listen to on the radio are Mets games and WNYC, but that isn't that often. (Being subjected to what other people are listening to on the radio doesn't count!) Most of my radio listening is podcasts, mainly from WNYC, NPR, and the BBC.
Who needs these idiots.
It is people like them in combination with big companies like Clear Channel and CBS who find it much easier and cheaper to centrally program stations out of one place using technology to faux-localize the content created in some godforsaken place like Texas - with no worry that anyone is going to be offended with the schmaltz they are playing. People don't listen to the radio for music anymore, they listen for these sort of morons.
I think the last video I saw on MTV was three years ago. These insufferable idiots and their ilk make commercial broadcast airwaves unlistenable.
Music companies: "Why are our sales down so much?"
"It's the darned Internet!"
Wait. People still listen to the crap on 92.3 Free FM? Wow. Who knew?
That's terrible, I'm sorry
Forgive my ignorance, but can you listen to ballgames on podcasts?
The day this becomes commonly available, you can shut the studio down. It's a shame, really... I'll miss it... but it will go the way of albums and network television.
why are talk radio hosts always loser scumbags? Except for Stern.. Stern's cool
I lahv 'you cannot and do not use that word under any circumstance' Feck that facist
"Greg and Tony in the Morning" is a pretty good show, but I hate their sidekick, Frrrrunkis.
watch out, once the assholes link you it's spam/homophobe central:

also i linked to the FCC's complaint page, i suggest you all go fill one out against these idiots.
And this bad was expecting a real interview on a commercial "morning zoo" format? BWAHAHAHAHAHA! There are still a few good noncommercial stations around, but this band obviously made a bad error in judgment.
Did anyone see the Family Guy episode where Stewie and Brian get their own morning show called Dingo and the Baby? It lambasted those crappy shock morning shows.
#20 Yes Matt because what we need is the FCC to fine more stations.
When you go into a studio, you should know what to expect. It's pretty stupid to insult the show and the station and expect to get a decent interview. The interview was a lot more than being called "gay" in every way possible. They even mentioned how they kinda liked the song.
People take this shit way too seriously. If you don't like it, turn it off. What we really don't need is more FCC censorship.

It amazes me how many anti-establishment types can't wait to go yelping to the government whenever they hear something that offends their fragile little worlds.
Actually, no it doesn't. Government's awesome when it bans something you don't like, right?
This whole thing is most awful and lame bourgeois display. People who fill out FCC complaint forms should get the plague.
More "Slap-Knee'd" Radio !
The only thing worth listening to these days is Howard Stern on satellite.
The entire FreeFM lineup is one hacky borefest after another.
The Doghouse show rocks.
You guys just don't get JV and Elvis' humor-- they make fun of EVERYONE!!
Besides, they didn't mean the "f" word as a reference to the bassist's sexual orientation. They just meant that the guy was an idiot.
As soon as the fool exposed his orientation, they stopped using the term.
Lighten up and get a sense of humor already!
DOGHOUSE!! WHAAAAATTTT???
You know, it's kind of infuriating that a lot of people here are all "you guys take that word way too seriously, it's just a joke, lighten up" (not the exact words, but the sentiment's obvious). I don't think anyone should be subjected to such demeaning/insulting language.
I took a three-month training class at a community radio station out here in Arizona. And I learned that the 'f-word' (the one used by these two DJs) is one not allowed for use on live air. you use it, get ready to have your license yanked.
People should be allowed to say what they want, but using that freedom of speech to insult people is really uncalled for.

I hope you've never stooped so low as to call the President an idiot then.
god i hate jv and elvis... they epitomize every horrible morning talk show.
And one of them laugh like a f'ing demon child/krusty the clown... CREEPS ME OUT
i'd rather listen to the same mp3s then turn on that crap
The laugh is Rudy Fenook. He's the Board Op. Yes, his laugh is ridiculous but it's hilarious too. Rudy is bi-sexual. I think that matters here. Free FM is great. I wish the people on here would find out more information on the shows they "hate" before destroying them. I, personally, find the show to be annoying sometimes.
onapartyrock!!!!!!!budday
Calling someone an idiot is done in response to something they can control. It's not that hard not to be an idiot. It's pretty much impossible to actually un-gay yourself, and that's not for lack of trying by thousands of people tired of being called a faggot by people who insist that it's perfectly OK.
Ughh I dont know how those two managed to make it to market #1. 92.3 should just play Opie and Anthony & Ron and Fez all day, instead of polluting the air waves with mindless, uninteresting and extremely boring shows from the time of 9AM to 6PM
