Last days of Coney Island as we know it, that is. Gothamist headed down to Coney Island yesterday to partake in an annual tradition - overeating and riding the Cyclone. It seemed like the crowds were smaller than normal, but the weather was brisk and there was a threat of rain. Despite the weather, we enjoyed our ride on the Cyclone and our overindulgence. Anyone looking for the batting cages and racetrack will be out of luck as they're already gone. With Astroland closing after this year, we'll be sure to head back to Coney Island more than a few times this year. The future of Coney will certainly not be the same.

bummer. when do rides close during the week?
it's only open weekends in the spring (everyday from june 15th). though the website says it will be open from april 2nd to april 10th as well.
Those are some nice photos.
Where is that pizza from? The crust looks amazing...
william - it's from totonno's and was actually a little dry. i've had better there before.
I think I'll probably go to the new Coney Island. I went to the old once and got creeped out when a midget in prison garb and white face scuttled across my path and got pretty turned off the whole thing.
P.S. Does that sign in the picture say "live human targets?" Um, not so into it. . .
What I'll miss the most is one of the most colorful bars in New York City, namely Ruby's Old Time Bar and Grill.
BTW, if you're "creeped out" by midgets, what the hell is wrong with you?
that nathan's frank looks mighty good. and, when did CI became a hipster locale? I'll always remember it as the poor man's hamptons where one takes the N train to it's last stop and if we were lucky, we'll get a lobster roll from Nathan's.
Gothamist is depressing the hell out of me with this "Wall to wall" coverage .
I know how horrible this feels, Luna park in Sydney my home town closed down for sometime, it reopened to very small crowds thankfully but it was closed for some 2 years "Under construction" I feel for you New yorkers who care about the history of your city :(
MT you are everything wrong with NYC these days. Go back to the burbs. Coney is for real new yorkers only.
