Child Injured in Brooklyn Heights Crash

2007_04_atlcrash.jpg

Reader Christoper sent us a set of photographs from the aftermath of a car accident in Brooklyn, on Atlantic Avenue near the BQE, yesterday. The front of a building is destroyed - with a "Do Not Enter" sign near the front. And an SUV looks crumpled. According to the Post, it turns out that a Bronx man had exited the BQE at 4AM, hit the sign, which was dragged under his car, and then crashed into the "unoccupied" Atlantic Peritoneal Dialysis Home Training Center.

The driver, 22-year-old Efrain Chiclana, was arrested for DWI at Bellevue; a female passenger was uninjured but a 2-year-old child in the car had serious injuries and was taken to Long Island College Hospital. Chiclana's father said, "My son [is] not doing too well. I just hope he gets better."

That is a very strange damage pattern on the Expedition. I can't imagine how the crash was able to cause damage of that nature.

I walked by it this morning. In my mind I was trying to make a CSI montage of how the accident happened, but I can't figure it out.

My mom saw it while the SUV was still stuck in the side of the building, so I ran over w/ my Canon 30d. Unfortunately they had already dragged it onto the street by the time i got there. The SUV came off the BQE going to the left side of the exit, hit the curb of the median and dragged dirt and the "do not enter sign" from the other side of Atlantic all the way across the street and the driver must have turned the wheels as he hit the building w/ the left side of the car. The car then crumpled like an accordion with the left side heavily damaged and the right side fine. I hope the kid is ok, pretty messy crash. Take a look @ the Flickr Set for more shots.

Well I hope he survives his injuries . So he can be charged with DWI !

I was the first one down there to get the girl out of the car. I did not see any child. There was a guy unconciess and all bloody in the back seat to. No mention of him. I think he hit the windshield and flew back. Any info on him?

This is to comment the comments. I understand how DWI is a horrible thing to do and we all understand the concequences. No one really can understand or know how much pain and guilt the party is feeling let this be a lesson to everyone out there who thinks that it is ok and it is an easy thing to get behind the wheel thinking you are sober. God bless the family and god bless whom ever has injuries. Let this be a lesson learned and taught.

It wasnt a 2 year old boy who was hurt. His name was Angelo Rodriguez and he was my friend. He was 22 years old and passed away that Thursday April 5th at night. I hope this serves as a lesson to all of the damages of drunk driving and not wearing a seatbelt can cause. He is greatly missed.

As was said man in the back seat did passaway. he was a good kid. He was not driving he was a sleep in the back. All you people are excited over the crash Pics. How dare you? A family lost there loved one. I lost a co-Worker. RIP Angel (A-ROD)Rodriguez (Mister MTA) CRB 42

I am the prosecutor assigned to this case. One of the 22 year old passengers passed away from his injuries after this collision. It would be very helpful if anyone who was a witness to the crash or immediately thereafter would contact me as soon as possible. Thank you.
