Wednesday Food News: Early Edition

img80.jpgThis week, Bruni visits Rosanjin in Tribeca for kaseiki, finds it "strange and sometimes wonderful" and awards the restaurant two stars. The meal of many small courses is supposed to provide spiritual uplift in its ceremony. For Bruni, "the glory is in the details," like the uni wrapped in a shiso leaf, then battered and fried. The later courses were letdowns, however, and sometimes the small courses left him hungry two hours later.

Also in the Times, Peter Meehan goes to Las Americas in Queens for $25 and Under. The restaurant, located behind a butcher shop, serves Columbian food "prepared with a surprisingly light hand," says Meehan. You can special order roast whole pig, and nothing on the regular menu costs more than $8.

Cuozzo talks to Michael Psilakis and Donatella Arpaia about their just opened Anthos, a new Greek restaurant in the former Acqua Pazza space on 52nd Street. This is Psilakis’ attempt to reinvent the cuisine with "ingredient-driven food that represents Greece in its best possible light," he says.

Paul Adams goes to Caffe Falai for the NY Sun, says "Pastas are the strong suit here." The antipasti and main dishes are hit or miss, as is the service: "Ordering a dish does not mean you'll ever get it," he says. But the desserts are a standout.

Ryan Sutton of Bloomberg News stops by Azza in midtown for Moroccan. Loves the falafel, charred octopus and couscous with lamb or chicken. He also likes the hookah you can smoke downstairs. Sutton also visits Bemelman's Bar at the Carlyle, where Brian Van Flandern, the formerly mixologist at Per Se, is newly installed and making great drinks. He's brought a new cocktail list with him.

Also this week the New Yorker heads to Queens for a trip to Sripraphai, Restaurant Girl heads to Nastumi, and New York Press stops by Jack the Horse Tavern.

Yeah, I loved the pasta at Caffe Falai...

...and I went back last weekend with my kids and had an array of excellent sweet treats: a beautifully flaky and rich pear chocolate turnover; flourless chocolate cake, which Bo said was like eating a serving of frosting (in a good way); and a dense and vanilla-y cream puff pastry. The coffee was good, too. Yes, the staff always seems a little harried, but they're also very friendly.

I love the Falai empire, but Caffe Falai is a bit of a bummer to go during dinner and get rushed to eat, since it closes at 8pm. I'll have to try it during lunch when I can linger.
