Queens Man Denies Telling NYPD Sean Bell Shot Him

2007_03_jefers.jpgHot potato no more? After the local papers seized on information (leaked by police sources) that a drug dealer claimed that Sean Bell, who was shot by police in November, shot him last summer, the man has come forward to deny he identified Bell as his assailant. Anthony Jeffers told the Daily News, "Here and there I sell drugs in the neighborhood. But I didn't say nothing about Sean Bell. I don't want no trouble with any of this. I called the cops today and told them that."

But Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Jeffers did tell police that Bell had shot him in a marijuana-dealing turf war. The Times reports the Commissioner as saying "I see no particular relevance to the events of Nov. 25, as far as this report is concerned."

The Post says Jeffers was arrested "for riding his bike on a Queens sidewalk" on Sunday. Seriously - though cops did want to question him about a robbery as well. But riding his bike on a sidewalk is not against the law a criminal offense, if annoying. Anyway, police sources claim Jeffers said Bell shot him in hopes of getting a deal. Bell's family's lawyer is upset with these attempts to dirty Bell's name. But Detectives' Endowment Association president Michael Palladino told the Times "[the report] give us a little insight into what was going on in Bell’s mind when the officers approached. If you’re not guilty of something, and there’s no gun in the car, then why not stop the car?"

Jeffers wants to be left alone. He also said, "I don't want nobody in the neighborhood saying I said Sean Bell shot me."

All those double negatives make it sound like Jeffers admits he told the cops something about Bell and the he does want trouble.

BTW, I'm pretty sure riding your bicycle on the sidewalk is illegal in NYC.

Actually, riding your bike on the sidewalk is against the law in the five boroughs. It is not a crime, but it is a violation. Most of the time a cop will let it go if the rider is not causing any problems with pedestrian traffic. However if it is causing problems, the cop may issue a summons. And if after running the rider's name through the system, it comes back that the rider has a warrant out of his arrest, he'll be cuffed and brought to court. Laugh all you want, stopping people for open containers, for smoking in a subway, for riding between cars and for riding bikes on the sidewalk cleans up an amazing amount of criminals off the street.

1. Cycling on the sidewalk is against the law.

2. That hat/dew rag combo should be against the law.

oh this is part of the "no snitching" culture

he looks like goofy with that flowing do-rag

Why wait for the Ringling Bros. show at Madison Square Garden? This case already has turned into the biggest circus of all.

Thanks, Bernie. Very helpful. But your status as a plain-old citizen never stopped you from doing the very same thing.

Agreed: This mope just doesn't want to be a snitch in his own neighborhood. Bad for business when you sell drugs in the neighorhood "here and there."

BTW, I'm pretty sure that's illegal too.

how much more obvious could it be that this guy changed his tune after finding himself in the papers?

of course I'm sure had this guy come forward saying he saw the cops kill Sean Bell without provocation, the cops would have been just as quick to believe his story ...

a few things:
i'm aure the police have a video or audio recording of this Bell convo.

riding a bike on a sidewalk if you're over the age of 14 in nyc is against the law

First off, No "Self respecting" drug dealers going to admit too the police that someone shot him ! (It's a form of snitching)Secondly, You would have to be straight up stupid to tell the local papers of this alleged connection . (The police) Thirdly, If this jackass did state all of what was printed, Then he will never be trusted by any of his cohorts in the hood again ! If their smart, They will disavow any knowledge of his existence !

I'm guessing that Anthony Jeffers wouldn't win any popularity contest in the 'hood right now.

Seems that he would rather be known as the local drug dealer than as the guy who snitched on Sean Bell.

He TOTALLY looks like goofy. Is goofy-chic the new trend? Do you guys remember when people had tazmanian devil and tweety bird tattoos and leather jackets with cartoon characters on them? I think it's coming back.

That's not a doo-rag. That's a graduation cap and those are his tassels. This is what you get to wear when you graduate from the school of keepin' it real. When you earn your masters, you get to wear a bag that says Coroner's Office down the side and your own personally autographed toe-tag. 'sup now playahatas?

Anyone want to take bets on when the Sean Bell incident will be turned into an episode of Law & Order? I wonder which five white guys will play the cops. Any guesses?

is that a do-rag? i don't get the black ear things.

yeah that's a doo rag...its blowing in the wind.. the "ear" areas are the little part you pull around and tie.

but this dude was a POT DEALER?? come on now... weed dealers don't shoot eachother.. the profit on weed is next to nothing.

you know who sells weed? stoners who want to smoke for free. this dude is bullshitting.

its sad that the NYPD can SMEAR Bell after MURDERING him and so many people focus on the drug dealer or his bad head dress...the NYPD shot at someone 50 odd times - at that time he hadnt done a thing - it wouldnt matter if he was a drug dealer the NYPD are not the judge or jury..sucks that they feel they can soften their crime by trying to pin other crimes on Sean Bell

A quote: "Bang-Bang, Kill a man let his brains hang, A plead guilty insane" ! Is what I think you meant to say #[14] .
