Last night, police officer Rory Mangra (pictured) attempted to approach a man smoking pot in Prospect Heights, but the man ended up shooting him in the leg. Mangra and his partner, Eric Merizelde, both uniformed but driving in an unmarked car, saw Kingsley Newland light up outside a beauty parlor at Flatbush Avenue and Dean Street in Brooklyn. From the Daily News:
Mangra stepped out of the car to approach Newland, but the suspect fled, police said. Merizelde sped ahead in the car, hopped a sidewalk and tried to block the suspect's path.Cops will do anything for a pot bust! Newland fired at Mangra, and then his gun jammed. Newland allegedly told the police,"I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to shoot him." Yeah, he was probably just trying to take his gun out to show the cops, and his trigger finger "slipped - a likely story!Newland dived across the hood of the car in a bid to escape, but Mangra snatched him. That's when Newland allegedly grabbed a .22-caliber semiautomatic pistol from the small of his back, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.
Commissioner Kelly and Mayor Bloomberg were at Methodist Hospital, where Mangra is recovering. Bloomberg said, "Here we are again - another night, another hospital and another member of New York's Finest shot with what appears to be an illegal gun." Kelly emphasized the dangers cops have been facing lately, "In the last few weeks, we have had officers thrown through a plate-glass window, stabbed through the skull, shot in the ankle and stomach, and of course Auxiliary Police Officers Nicholas Pekearo and Eugene Marshalik were murdered. At the same time that crime continues to plummet, our police officers keep encountering suspects who would rather fight than be taken into custody."

You see if Pot was legal, this wouldn't have happened!
Good for that pot smoker. Cops should be shot.
1) All privately-owned firearms should be illegal.
2) If caught with an illegal firearm, you ought to be tossed in jail for 10 years.
3) Fuck you, NRA freaks. Move to some island where you can all share your common orgasmic "right to bear arms" and hopefully kill one another in record time.
LEGALIZE WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN US..... A PLANT !
Legalize It!
and let's set free "each unharmful, gentle soul misplaced inside a jail"
anonymass, the problem here doesn't have anything to do with the legal status of weapons but rather the legal status of marijuana.
and the weapon was illegal in the first place, so why would restricting other peoples' liberty actually have prevented this crime?
I can just see Sharpton's nappy head spinnin and spinnin - 'black cop, black perp - which way do I go'!
Of course pot should be legal, but it's not, so you don't run from cops, and you don't shoot at them either. Jail - Jail -Jail.
This guy just single-handedly destroyed the stereotype of the mellow pot smoker.
If Kingsley Newland was packing a .22, pot smoking was probably the least of his offenses. How much do you want to bet that he has a prior rap sheet?
Doesn't anyone remember former police commish Bratton's very successful "fixing broken windows" crime fighting policy? This theory proposed that by curtailing petty crime and low-level anti-social behavior, major crime will also be prevented. (It was surprising how many fare beaters in the subway also had outstanding arrest warrants for more serious crimes.)
>"This guy just single-handedly destroyed the stereotype of the mellow pot smoker."
That is because he just lit up and the cop interupted him before he attained a mellow buzz.
Don't cops have anything better to do than harass pot smokers?
It is about time we at least decriminalize pot.
Leagalization is a impossible goal with the level of stupidity in this country. Plus the religious wackos who think it is a sin. (just nuts). There is slim hope for legalization.
But we have to stop throwing people in jail for weed.
It is non violent pot cases where jurys have got to start using their right and power of "Jury Nullification" and throw these bullshit busts out.
It is the peoples only way to smack down a govt./justice system that is way out of control throwing too many non violent people and young adults in jail for pot.
jeez folks, what's at issue here isn't whether pot should be legal, they could have been approaching the guy for jaywalking or littering, and he freaked out an order of magnitude too far. what kind of an asshole whips out a gun on two cops, let alone fires it?
I'm in favor of legalizing marijuana.
However, whether pot is legal or illegal doesn't change the fact that this guy was carrying a gun and, worse, fired it.
If I were king there'd be no drug charge but he'd be locked up for 10 years for carrying a handgun and another 20 for using it.
The point is... the cop probably would have never approached the guy if it was not for the pot and a potential bust.
None of this would have happened if they were not going for a lame ass pot bust.
Hey Bernie - nappy?!! His hair ain't nappy.
#13 Towlie
Nor would it have happened if Mr. Newland had decided to get a little high somewhere sheltered instead of out in the open. And you're a towel.
This ridiculous ! I don't see why they don't just legalize weed ! I've never heard of anyone dying from ingesting it . Never heard of anyone crashing there car killing others because of it ! So why not just legalize it ? Because that would be opening the flood gates to corporate development . Everybody would be growing their own stash . Eventually someone would get shot over it and that would used as an excuse for legalizing weed in the first place ! Maybe if the Government did legalize weed they would stand to lose billions in taxes, & kick backs from the Pharmaceutical companies that lobby lawmakers too death ! *thought speeds through my head* That's it ! That's why weed will probably never be legalized in this country ! M-O-N-E-Y !!!!!!!!!
the cops should have killed him and spared the tax payers another million dollar court fee.

1) constitution is better than you nah nah nah
2) we can see how this has helped washington DC stay safe
3) you should consider reading the work of florida state criminologist dr. gary kleck, who shares your liberal politics for the most part, outside of a distinct difference on the issue of gun ownership and crime rates (and injury rates, etc).
you might actually learn something!
dhex, all theories aside, have you ever asked yourself why no other first world country has anywhere near the level of gun violence we do?
Maybe it's because firearms are so easy to obtain? And maybe that's a result of a subset of the population (not to mention a lobby) which foams at the mouth at the mere suggestion of curtailing the easy proliferation of firearms. A group which has successfully banded together to influence elections at the local and national levels?
Can't possibly be any correlation there.
>dhex, all theories aside, have you ever asked yourself why no other first world country has anywhere near the level of gun violence we do?
Ever ask yourself why so many other heavily armed countries don't?
As for the easy proliferation of firearms, try and legally buy and carry a handgun in New York (hell, you can't legally carry a knife in NYC). It is basically impossible to legally carry. Yet there are still quite a few handguns (mostly cheap shit like Hipoint) on the street.
Clearly, increased legislation is the solution to this problem.
No, making it easier for people in this country to procure hollowpoint bullets and semi-automatic assault rifles on the free market is.
Cops will do anything for a pot bust!
What the hell is that supposed to mean, Gothamist?
You might not like it, but the legislation is on the books. An officer's job is not to enforce the laws they feel like going after. Their job is to enforce the laws on the books.
Your bias is showing. Keep the editorializing in the editorials.
Think thats' some hyperbole. I'd be interested to see DUI arrest/accident info that breaks down those abusing alcohol vs. pot.
I say legalize pot but not for sidewalk consumption (like alchohol).
Newland deserves to be arrested & prosecuted - for being dangerous and stupid.
