Though not necessarily together. The Mayor believes in zeppole and fair games, telling reporters: "I understand the frustration of the community, who has their streets blocked and a lot of noise at night. On the other hand, it is part of New York."
But yesterday the Mayor also spent some time defending the spying the NYPD did prior the Republican National Convention, chalking it up to "a fundamental responsibility to learn whether groups might include any potential terrorists or anarchists planning to cause or take advantage of any disruptions." Though the mayor said the city was focused on groups that could resort to violence, the NY Times suggests otherwise:
But the records show that the police did covertly monitor political activity. Virtually every intelligence report, even those about expressly peaceful groups, described the political viewpoints of the organizations. And speaking of spying, the city dropped its lawsuit against Times Up! over Critical Mass. On NY Turf writes "the City dropped this case because it did not want to disclose information that was going to come out in the discovery process, including: documentation of the NYPD's undercover operations at Critical Mass, all police video of Critical Mass, plans and internal documents relating to Critical Mass."For example, a Feb. 6, 2004, police report said that Leslie Cagan, the national coordinator of United for Peace and Justice, an antiwar organization, would speak at a conference later that month at City University Graduate Center. Her presence, a headline in the report said, “indicates a reinforcement of ties between organizers and expanding activist youth movement.”

That the city has to protect itself from the people that finance its spy schemes is a classic totalitarian move. Bloomberg is showing his fascist side. Kelly simply is fascist; he doesn't have another side.
IMO, The Mayor's seems to think that if your politically active, your a potential Terrorist.
Wonder if the NYPD kept track of the few anti-war Republican Groups?
The City dropped the Critical Mass Lawsuit? So much for being "tough" on crime. How much money did the City waste on the Mayor's foolish vendetta??
I just watched 'Mean Streets' last night and there's a scene where Harvey Keitel and Robert DeNiro are driving through Little Italy talking and DeNiro says to Keitel "I hate this friggin' festival with a passion" or something to that extent.
If Scorcesse felt that way I'm inclined to agree.
Would be that our thrifty-minded Mayor should reveal how much taxpayer money was wasted on these pre-RNC undercover operations. The kind of money that may have been put to more practical uses - like furnishing auxilliary cops with bulletproof vests.
And if our Mayor is a real New Yorker, not a visitor who abandons the city on weekends, maybe he'd like to take a sidewalk-facing apartment on Mulberry Street for 2 weeks during the next San Gennaro. Then he'd have an up-close-and-personal seat for all the noise, garbage and boorish behavior generated by this generic fest.
Well You know how Dickheads do .
