Sean Bell wasn't killed because of his "past mistakes." He was killed because of his LAST mistake, i.e. trying to ram his way out of the situation. Most of us would have stopped the car if we're boxed in and surrounded by people with guns. They claimed they were afraid someone was trying to rob them. Most people would just give the supposed robbers what they want. Money can be replaced, life and limb can't. Robbers or cops, if they haven't started firing, you don't give them an excuse. And actually robbers would have shot first instead of just pointing a gun at you.

this is sad for me, i have a good friend who was murdered recently. the only press on him was what they found on his rather impressive record, which was an inaccurate way to judge him. knowing someone on paper and in real life is totally different- whatever someone's history is they still love and have people who love them. justice should be served, our police are supposed to protect us, not kill us, regardless of our past mistakes. if you want to talk about THE PAST, let's talk about the legacy of slavery, segregation, disenfranchisement, and institutional racism in this country that has bred poverty and ignorance that results in young people turning to drugs and violence.

But OF COURSE that asshole Bell was no innocent daisy. What kind of moron would have tried to ram police officers (or anyone for that matter) with their vehicle. The guy's a fucking low-life criminal who pulled the Race Card to try to get out of trouble. l0b0t if you're such an excellent marksman like you say you were and if you really did serve, you'd know as well as I do that you shoot to end the threat. And you should also be well aware of the type of stress a shooter goes through when the adrenalin is pumped to the max and when you've got others shooting at the same person/thing/object with you. You should also be well aware that a lot of cops rarely put in any range time other than to make quals. On a minor note, you also oughta know the difference between a "clip" and a "magazine". After all, you were in the Army, right? It's always easier to armchair quarterback...

the only issue here is the poor marksmanship - if the cops had fired once, and hit their mark, and he was still dead - it would have been end of story. the mook was evading, tried to use the vehicle as a deadly weapon, and was up to no good. I feel bad for his bride to be, she lost her man and her baby's daddy, even if he was a piece of shit, and now the vultures are using her for their 'cause'. it's shameful.

I think it's completely relevant if he shot a drug dealer. It shows his character. Sean Bell was arrested 3 times, once for ILLEGAL GUN POSSESSION and twice for selling crack. He also got drunk and wanted to gang-bang a stripper with 2 of his friends the night before his wedding. Although he was no angel he didn't deserve to be shot to death.

There seems to be an important issue being overlooked, the utter lack of proper firearms training being given to our city's finest. 50 SHOTS FIRED!! That is inexcusable marksmanship. With more than 30 shots comming from one officer, he had to have fired his weapon until it was empty, removed the empty clip, taken a full clip out of his pouch, reloaded his weapon, and continued firing, all to subdue one suspect. An incompetent jackass like that has no business sharing the streets with those of us who prefer not to die from stray gunfire. A great deal of my Army career was spent training young people to handle firearms, I made the division pistol team 5 years in a row, and I have a concealed carry permit that is reciprocal almost everywhere but New York. I'm not allowed to carry a handgun in this city, but if you are a mafia hitman or you can't hit the broadside of a barn then there is a rewarding posting to the NYPD in your future. C'mon NYC, all the red states are laughing at you.

apologies, if this is a double posting i think that resistance to police questioning would apply only if cops identified themselves (anybody know more??) which does not appear to be the situation here.

this may not have relevance, but i will tell you what does: the arrest records of the occupants of the vehicle. since the cops will prob not testify, the occupants of the car will and the defense will dig their talons in deep.
