Songs That David Wright Should Swing To

2007_03_wrightman.jpg

Mets third baseman David Wright has been embraced by the public for his baseball skills, team work, and adorable face. He's been hitting a .316 average in spring training and now the Mets plan to settle up some important business with Wright: What song will be played when he goes to bat? They announced today the launch of an online fan vote at Mets.com to select Wright's at-bat song selections. The full list is here, let's take a closer look.

"Wild Thing" was done in the Charlie Sheen flick Major League, and we're pretty sure no one needs to hear Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" anymore, but what's up with these picks?: "Chasing Cars" by Snow Patrol, "Clocks" by Coldplay, "Soul Meets Body" by Death Cab for Cutie? Unless Wright is swinging in slow motion or is in a weepy Grey's Anatomy montage, these choices seem a little too slow and emotive.

His past batting songs have been Beastie Boys' "Brass Monkey", DMX's "We Right Here" and Zapp's "More Bounce To The Ounce." Along those lines, we think it would be best to keep the song a bit more rocking. Who wants to hear Ben Gibbard crooning the words "I want to live where soul meets body / And let the sun wrap its arms around me / And bathe my skin in water cool and cleansing / And feel, feel what its like to be new" at a baseball game? Also, unless a new mashup of Kanye West's "Jesus Walks" called "Jesus Hits Home Runs" comes out, that probably isn't the best choice. And while the Boss would appeal to many fans, "Born to Run" is just too corny in this context.

What do you think is the Wright music? And while we're not sure Jack White would ever survive a baseball game without SPF 100, we think "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripes (YouTube) would be a great choice. You can vote here - and then the second phase will be during April 2-6.

As an MLB employee, I've tried in vain to have "My Humps" included on the list.

Clearly, they're going to need a few choices. So, my votes: Seven Nation Army, Drop It Like It's Hot, the A-Team theme song (but what's sad is that Wright was a baby when the show was on - I feel so old), and What I'd Say.

"wild boys" by duran duran. please.

  • Paul Boocock

It has to be something like 'China Grove'...a good walking to the plate song has to be good for a slow-motion highlights package - that is to say it has to be good for when you walk to the plate you have to feel like what you are about to do will look really good in slow motion.

It's the A-Team song that I hope wins.

I liked it in Piazza's first couple of years with the Mets, when they played "Voodoo Child."

I think King Crimson's 20th Century Schizoid Man is great entrance music, but I'm from the 70s.
