The Cinecultist's Weekly Repertory Movie Pick: New Directors/New Films

Don't you just love that feeling of "discovering" a new artist that no one else knows about yet? The New Directors/New Films festival curated by the Film Society at Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art's Film department have been keeping New Yorkers ahead of the cinema curve for 35 years now with their annual series. In the past they've showcased such newbies as Chantal Akerman, Pedro Almodóvar, Héctor Babenco, Terence Davies, Guillermo del Toro, Atom Egoyan, Nicole Holofcener, Spike Lee, Richard Linklater, Sally Potter, John Sayles, Steven Spielberg, Tom Tykwer and Wim Wenders, so you know picking at random from even just one of the 26 films in the series could yield a new favorite auteur.

Of the wonderful selection running until April 1, Gothamist is particularly jazzed to catch local novelist Paul Auster's second feature The Inner Life of Martin Frost, which is showing one more time on Saturday at 1 pm. Also, we caught a preview screening of Andrea Arnold's Red Road [pictured] about a security guard in Glasgow who begins investigating/stalking a man who lives in a housing project and highly recommend it. It's the first installment in a new Dogme challenge to make three movies by different filmmakers using the same actors and characters. One more event of note: on Sunday at 1 pm, HBO Films will be hosting a roundtable discussion with current and past ND/NF directors (Paul Auster, Julia Loktev, Kim Massee, Eric Mendelsohn, Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden) about the pitfalls and pleasures of shooting from your own script. It should be a lively talk from some really great directors.

A few other "art house" movies playing this weekend worth checking out are documentarian Frederick Wiseman's Model about an '80s New York model agency at the Museum of the Moving Image, Max Ophül's classic The Earrings of Madame De... at Film Forum and the restored print of the Oscar-nominated documentary about NYC's former skid row On The Bowery at Anthology Film Archives.
