NY State agricultural officials say that testing so far has indicated the presence of rat poison in recalled pet food. According to ABC News, a source says "the rodenticide, which the source says is illegal to use in the United States, was on wheat that was imported from China and used by Menu Foods in nearly 100 brands of dog and cat food." Yikes! [Via Poop City, which has had excellent coverage of the recall.]
During the press conference, NY State ag officials emphasized that they are not even half way done with testing, but they came forward with the information because it could help other investigations as well as pet owners and vets who are dealing with sick pets. The officials also said the number of confirmed deaths due to the tainted food - 15 cats and one dog - seemed low. Pet Connection has been keeping an unofficial database of pet deaths, which is now around 1,000.
The massive recall of foods from Menu Foods involved almost 100 brands, including brand names like Iams and Eukanuba as well as store-labels from Wal-Mart and Safeway; here is Menu Foods' recall site. Readers have posted heartbreaking stories on our post from Saturday.

i m in ur kibble, killing ur pets
Don't we have enough amber waves of grain here? The idea that we import and export so much wheat is absurd, and this is a case in point.
Why do we need to import wheat? I thought we had enough to feed us and then some.
Hey, this is what the free market is all about. Outsourcing wheat saves costs. So what if there's a little poison? Poison puts hair on Fido's chest.
Why would people feed WHEAT to their animals anyway?
#2 & #3, Menu Foods is a Canadian company, not American. According to Wikipedia, China is the world's largest wheat producer with an annual production of appx. 96 million metric tons, compared to 57 million metric tons and 26 million metric tons in the US and Canada, respectively.
Thats BS that its from the wheat. Its from the euthanized and rendered meat of cats and dogs and any other thing that is warm blooded. The industry and federal govt would NEVER admit its from the rendered meat. EVER!

Or it just might be pets are consoming way to
many posioned rats instead of feed produced
overseas! anyway just say no night help.
The bottom line is the U.S. government needs to find out who poisoned the pet food in the first place. What if these sick people's next step is cereal, this is what homeland security should be doing instead of tapping my telephone.
