London cabs are great! Roomy, clean, handicapped-accessible, comfprtable riding, easy to get my arthritic body into and out of... and yes, the cabbies know every street, and the best way to get wherever you want to go.

Apparently there will be a press conference and rally tomorrow in Jackson Square Park about this - supporters and protesters are welcome, they say:

Jackson Square Park
Horation Street & Greenwich Avenue
11:00am
Speakers: Virgin Atlantic Airways VP Bill King, Tea & Sympathy owner Sean Kavanaugh-Dowsett...

I agree with Toby. Arriving in NY a couple weeks ago I was appalled at how little actual street knowledge most of the cabbies seemed to have - esp outside Manhattan. I have never had to direct a London cabbie street-by-street using my own printed maps.

With absolutely no research behind me to back this up, I've got a feeling that this Little Britain campaign is going to prove to be a marketing thing for the HBO version of the show...

Luckily there are too many Irish types in New York who will never let that lil Britain thing happen. I mean, it's a great sketch show and all but naming a street? Nah.

I was born in London and I still prefer New York! How's that for an endorsement?

A hybrid Checker cab would be the way to go.

I think that New York needs to establish something like "The Knowledge"that the London cabbies have to learn before they can get behind the wheel. Plus having a purpose built vehicle for use as a taxi is a damn good idea. Why do we wax nostalgic for Cheker Marathon taxis? Because you actually had room then (well they did seem huge when I was a little kid). Other cities in the country have more than just one of the newer versions of the London cabs in service and they would be perfect here.

As for London, trie riding the tube at 3 a.m. - not going to happen. Plus they have a complicated fare system.
