Yesterday afternoon, demonstrators protested the Queens grand jury indictments of three police officers in the November 2006 shooting of Sean Bell. Marchers, who walked from Union Square to 1 Police Plaza, were upset that only three of the five officers who shot at Bell and his two friends, all of them unarmed, were indicted.
And there's a little dissonance between the coverage in the Daily News and Post about Detective Michael Oliver, who fired 31 of the 50 shots at Bell. The Daily News notes that he was keeping a low profile yesterday, shoveling snow outside his parents home in NJ, but the Post puts him on the cover, reporting that he had a $4,200 dinner at Nello:
Oliver had an hourlong dinner at 7 p.m. yesterday with four young hotties and the man who picked up the check, José Garcia, Oliver's friend from Spain.WABC 7 has video of Oliver leaving the restaurant. The unmarried Oliver was particularly flirty with one foxy brunette, said sources inside the restaurant.
He was overheard talking about the case, although he didn't appear agitated until he spotted waiting photographers and started talking testily into his cellphone.
"I have nothing to say. I'll see what happens," he said after exiting the eatery at 62nd Street and Madison Avenue. "I have no comment. Talk to my lawyer."
One of the women said the group was holding a birthday celebration, but didn't say for whom.
They dined on four orders of dover sole, and two plates of pasta with truffles. The latter goes for a whopping $180 a pop.
They washed down the fine food with five $575 bottles of Brunello di Montalcino wine, then closed the meal with a dessert of tiramisu, apple pie and sips of Frangelico.
The Daily News does have a story about how Queens DA Richard Brown has a "pro-police rep."

Well, it states clearler that Oliver did not pick up the check, his friend Garcia did. Big deal.
5 people $4000.00 most of which was liquor.
Well I guess it proves the old maxim that the news gets slanted by the media........
This $4000 dinner seems sort of irrelevant to the case, doesn't it?
who cares? leave the guy alone. the media should write about what the rev al has for dinner.
is that the chick from friends?
that dinner comes out to $80 per shot.
How is it slanted when it's in The Post? Aren't they pro NYPD, all the live long day?
Reverend Al Sharpton didn't shoot 50 shots.

Big fuckin deal.
The guy goes out, has a good time, has hot dates and his buddies pick-up the bills for him. So what?.
And BTW, Sean Bell WAS NOT "unarmed". He used his vehicle as a weapon while trying to run-down police officers.
Numbers 1 thru 8 you are all cops, now I get it...No wonder all the comments are so sick and bitter and angry.
So that means all the cars in the city should be "banned" because they are considered "arms".
Maybe the Mayor should work on getting cars off the streets before they kill more people.
At least, the cops got home OK, that's all that matters, right?
Yo Squidfly, I'm NOT a cop anymore than you're a smart guy. I just call it like it is.
(waiting--with bated breath--for my friend to show up and start making more thinly veiled pseudo-racial insults towards me!)
yay for "ching", aka me!

oooohhh temper, temper...
callin it like it is...hmmm...what exactly? You haven't made an original statement...
Four grand is one helluva deal, hookers aren't cheap these days.
Give the guy a break. He knows he's going to spend the next 20 years getting twigs and berries jammed up his starfish. Let him have one last night out with some hot pooosay.
HOW did the press find out about this event and his appearance - did one of the invited guests leak it ...Why?
Also, did the news photographer get those women's consents to include them in the front page news photographs?
Holy crap! He ate dinner? THE BASTARD! Doesn't he know that if you're indicted you're meant to sit at home in a corner, rocking back and forth and crying?
The Post and Daily News are ridiculous for reporting it and you guys are twice as ridiculous for making a bigger deal out of it.
Seriously.
Why isn't anyone concerned about the apparent make over that Bell's Baby Mama/Fiance seems to have gotten???
I think the Post was allowed to put Oliver's companions on the cover because it's for the news. However, I think some footage showed them blurred out.
Certainly Oliver is allowed to go out and have dinner, but laying low, pre-indictment, probably would have been a better idea. And having a dinner where your table is ordering many $575 bottles of wine does seem excessive.
As for Bell's fiancee, it just looks like she's gotten her hair cut, I don't know if she's had a make-over. She was very remarkably poised after Bell was shot, but I could understand wanting to look even more polished while testifying for a grand jury.
Nice fucking poll Jen...very fair. While the site does not say it will be objective anywhere, you might want to try a little harder to keep out your obvious bias to a lot of items you post.
then don't participate Jacko. and don't log on to gothamist.
Jen, keep doing what you're doing.
$575 for ONE bottle of wine is rather extravagant.
Squidfly,
I am not a cop. I am actually a supporter of the late Sean Bell, his fiance and Al Sharpton.
However, I think what this cop ate for dinner is irrelevant to the case and is just sensational journalism intened to draw attention away from the real facts of the case.
I am supporter of Sean Bell AND of serious journalism.
You actually SUPPORT Sharpton?!?
I'm a firm supporter of my TESTICLES.
Dear The Edge,
Yes, I actually SUPPORT Al Sharpton. In addition to never giving up and never shuting up for what he believes in (a very admirable trait) he smart, charming and a great speaker too.
Signed,
A Proud Liberal White Chick Who Supports Al Sharpton
The reverend Al Sharpton has changed a lot since his giant medallion wearing days.
He's always sharp as a tack when being interviewed, either by Larry King or Howard Stern. Especially on HS, he dared HS to find him ever saying a racist remark. (and, invited HS to dinner at his home) Unlike Jackson with his hymietown reference.
Wow! This should really put Al Sharpton`s knickers in a twist. Although, how come Mr. Sharpton has not investigated why Mr. Trump has now fired two contestants of color these past two weeks on "The Apprentice"? Where are Al`s priorities?
Dear A Proud Liberal White Chick Who Supports Al Sharpton:
I hope you know where Sharpton lives and sends his kids to school, cause it ain't here!
it's always a treat to read squidfly's unbiased insights. that man has such clarity, perspective and an uncanny way with wit.
dear vanessa. yes, al really is a talented speaker and he stands up for what he believes in. unfortunately, he believes in himself. period. you just keep supporting that divisive blowhard my proud friend. but i'm warning you, crow tastes awful.
what happened? was my post too on target? so much for the free expression of ideas.
That WAS a rather biased poll...

I'm so flattered. You silly threatened Euro Ethnic.

My apologies Vanessa. The problem with a thread such as this is that it is reminiscent of the old Lynching photographs of the "Strange Fruit" swinging in the tree's, while the community gather to have picnics, bar b que's and dance around the tree. The comments leveled at Sharpton are so bitter and full rage, that most of the folks on this thread are following in the ancestors footsteps.

As for Jesse Jackson , he is the only activist to have secured the release of many hostages. As for Sharpton he's not a multi-deferment dodger like Guiliani, Bush, Cheney, Hannitay, O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Kristol, Wolfowitz, Pearle.
You talk about someone whose interested in himself, then take your pick of a group of war profiteer's.
well, i never said anything about jesse jackson but we do agree on one thing: jackson and sharpton fit nicely in that list of self-agrandizing scumbags you've collected. the difference being that they don't make a living preaching racism.
