Bloomberg Aide Celebrated Too Much, Perhaps

2007_03_maritimehotel.jpgMoving onto a new job is always exciting - and it's always another opportunity to have a farewell party from your old one. But it seems that partying got the better of former deputy commissioner of the Community Assistance Unit Christopher Coffey. The Daily News reports that Coffey was pulled over in his car after the police got a call about a "rowdy drunk" - apparently Coffey had been "stumbling around and pounding on cars" after leaving a bar at the Maritime Hotel.

His blood alcohol at 0.149 - well over the 0.08 limit - and the police say Coffey told them, "I'm not turning off the car and I'm not getting out." Oh, and the car was a city vehicle. Coffey pleaded not guilty to DWI charges, and his new job at the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation may be in jeopardy.

Some other interesting details from the News: Coffey's friends tried to prevent him from driving. Though Coffey has no college degree, Coffey was making $101,156, after "rising through the ranks" since working on Bloomberg's 2001 election campaign. Coffey's mother, Diane, had been Chief of Staff under Mayor Koch, and she is very active in the arts; last year, Mayor Bloomberg was one of many who paid tribute to her at an Alliance for the Arts event. And the Mayor's office says, "We are saddened by this massive lapse in judgment, but since he had already resigned from his position, we won't be pursuing further disciplinary action."

Well, The juice will make you do things that ordinarily you wouldn't . So this is no surprise !

How is it relevant whether he had a college degree. There have been some very educated people who have committed serious lapses in judgment before. It's almost as if you're asserting that he wasn't entitled to the salary he was earning because he didn't posses an MFA or a BA in English, or some other such bullshit.

Well, M.Ass let's do the math shall we:

A well connected mommy, no college degree, not even close to being 30 earning over $100k a year in a rather high position of the administration and leaving for another job headed by Mayor moneybag. You know what you're right. There's absolutely nothing fishy here. He probably gotten everything on his own and earned every bit of it.

Sure, Bill Gates doesn't have a college degree - not everyone needs one.

But like Schadenfreudian Mensch, one has to wonder if any other 27-year-old without a degree would be able to get enough promotions to be a deputy commissioner.

That's why I included that tidbit from the Daily News story - it's basically too interesting to pass up.

I'm 27; I make about the same salary; I could not afford to finish college; and although my parents are not connected to anything, does this mean that I am not qualified for my job? It's really sad that people still discriminate because of age or lack of a paper degree. Don't get me wrong, this guy is an idiot, just like most of the government appointed under qualified, well connected "officials". Need I mention Micheal Brown of FEMA, or 70% of presidential appointees? Its obvious that he got the job because of mommy, but his age and lack of degree should not have any thing to do with this discussion.

Let's not be so quick to throw this guy under the bus. I can only speak for what I know and personally have experienced in working with Chris. I was fortunate enough to have met and worked with Chris on several community issues. Chris worked tirelessly and selflessly to support the administration, the people and the city of NY. Chris worked 24/7 without complaint. He loved his job and it showed. So, he had a connection, big deal, most people do. He may have had help getting "in the door", but the rest was on his own. If you divided his 101K salary by the number of hours he worked in what could be a pretty thankless position, you would probably say he was underpaid. The article painted a very negative portrait of a very good, positive person. I will not comment on what took place because I was not there and don't have all the facts.
