The Mystery of the Disappearing Shake: SOLVED
It's the time of year when the Gothamist Food mailbox is chock full of pleas. You want it . . . you need it . . .you must have your Shamrock Shake. We've tried to help you find them in the past, but to no avail. But now, dear readers, the mystery of why a Shamrock Shake is nowhere to be found in the five boroughs has been solved, thanks to the investigative team at the Daily News:
"New York region no longer stocks the Shamrock Shake," Jennifer Nagy of McDonald's regional marketing told me. "Our branches can vote region by region," and in New York City, the five boroughs and surrounding areas, they're not voting green. Not so outside the Empire State. "We have it," a worker at a Boston McDonald's told me when I called. "We'll have it for the whole summer!"
"Oh yeah," said a rep for McDonald's in Philadelphia. "And our area extends into southern Jersey."
Based on an extensive telephone survey, I discovered that New York is the only dry spot on the Northeast coast.
While the supply is spotty, the shake can be found at select locations from Maine to southern Connecticut. Then it disappears again until Trenton, N.J.
And although Gothamist was contacted by a cheerful PR rep for Chick-fil-A, offering a minty green alternative, the "Mint Cookies and Cream Milkshake," we found ourselves again faced with a similar regional crisis -- we do not have a Chick-fil-A in NYC (although there is rumored to be one in the NYU student center).
Are you willing to cross state lines to get your fix, or will you make do with the homemade version?

I think I saw a Coldstone Creamery advertise some sort of minty shake.
Ah, if only there was a chick-fil-A in NYC... I'd be there every damn day.
I hit the Paramus Chick-fil-A with some frequency, to make up for NYC's lack of chicken sandwiches topped with pickles. That said, if you need a shamrock shake stand-in, Ben & Jerry's is your destination for the Dublin O'Chillo - Dublin Mudslide ice cream mixed with Cappachillo® coffee, milk & ice, topped with fresh whipped cream.
I've been going to Baskin & Robbins for their mint chocolate chip ice cream shake the past couple of years. Closest you can come Shamrock shake in NYC these days.
The Chick-Fil-A is located at the Weinstein Food Court inside the Weinstein Residence Hall (5-11 University Place).
Those without an NYU ID should be able to get inside the food court since the food court is outside the secure area.
No McDonalds Shamrock Shakes allowed in the 5 boroughs due to rat turd content
When I was at NYU, you did need an id to get into the food court at Weinstein. Might not be in the secure area, but you do still have to walk past security guards. Of course, when I was there, we didn't have Chik Fil A, either... dammit. I would have eaten there everyday.
My friend, who does not attend NYU but is college age, has no trouble getting into the Chick Fil A at Weinstein. You don't need to flash an ID to the guard, but maybe if you look like you definitely aren't a student they'll stop you. And wouldn't that be embarrassing?
McDonalds has cursed it's irish name and brought shame to us who are from there, and the final slap in the face, on the eve of celebrating our history, no shamrock shake.
McDonalds hates the irish there fore i hate McDonalds
what is wrong with you people? eating at mcdonalds? nyc has far better places to even get a minty milkshake other than that shithole.
I'm completely willing to cross state lines for a shamrock shake. Where do y'all think I can get one the fastest via Path, NJ Transit, Metro-North, or other?
God bless you, Gothamist. You have solved the mystery of the disappearing Shamrock Shake that has plagued me since the early 90s.
Oh and Chick-fil-A? Don't even get me started. They should just acquiesce and open a proper outpost, like Trader Joe's.
#12, much like Tiffany's, Chick-fil-A isn't open on Sunday. Unlike Tiffany's, it's a national policy predicated on the fact that people should be in church.
For an NYC QSR, this is a business plan challenge the likes of cracking the interstate redemption of Michigan's 10 cent bottle refund. If anyone can come up with a way to make this work, I'll come in with half the franchise fee.
At least one McDonald's in Chicago still has the green "Shamrock" shake. At least they were advertising these shakes a few weeks ago when I was there.
i have an idea: why don't you assholes that want chick-fil-a so badly, move to fucking paramus or shut the fuck up?
thanks
I'm a current NYU student. You don't need an ID to get into the Weinstein food court (straight ahead when you walk in the front door), but I don't think you can get a shamrock shake there, unfortunately.
Amen #15
Jess - NJ Transit to PA's Septa - an hour and a half into Philly.
I moved to New York to GET AWAY from Shamrock Shakes and Chik-Fil-As.

Were Shamrock Shakes really plaguing you that much in your old town?
my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard..
oh wait..not in NY...
How can you call yourself McDonalds and get rid of the Shamrock Shake.
i absolutely love chick fil a and also drive to paramus regularly. i can't wait to hit NYU. if i need an ID, i will sign up for a walking tour through the school of continuing education just to get a temporary ID.
there is no chick fil a in manhattan because they can't be open on sundays. i would think it would be tough to pay manhattan rent on only 6 days of revenues, no?
"McDonalds has cursed it's irish name"
Irish? I thought McDonalds was a Scottish name, like you know...Scrooge McDuck.
Too funny how I was always able to get my shamrock shake fix after moving to LA and now back in NYC, can't get it.
forget the shamrock shake, when is NYC going to get the cadbury mini-eggs mcflurry?

Mc/Mac surnames are of Gaelic origin and mean Son of.
People from Scotland can have those surnames, but their ancient ancestors came from Ireland.
Happy St. Paddy's day (tomorrow).
[24] Rich: Sadly, the Shamrock shake is no longer present in LA either. Check www.blogging.la for the story. Bastards.
Hey, 15...
Suck my two delicious pickle slices, you knob; either you're a blackhearted communist vegetarian or you know not of that which you speak.
I'd trade all the McDonalds and all the Shamrock Shakes in all of Christendom for one single Chik-fil-A with reasonable access to a convenient subway line. I'd trade up every White Castle, too. I'd even trade ever pizza maker using the name Ray's.
I'm infiltrating NYU to-day!
This is but the latest in a long line of reasons to hate NYU students.
Original sandwich and waffle fries for $4.25. Never on Sunday, but it sure made this Monday more bearable. There's a catering menu kicking around, too, if you're looking for 30 "finger" sandwiches and a gallon of lemonade.
One of the interesting things about the Shamrock Shake is that the green coloring seems to be untouched by the human digestive system. A friends son was totally spooked when the day after, everything came through bright green.
