NYC Album Art: The Dictators, Bloodbrothers

2007_03_arts_dictators.jpgThe Dictators 1978 album Bloodbrothers was shot by Chris Colln in a New York City school yard. The front is shown at right, the back can be seen here.

The New York punk band is said to have taken "booze, testosterone and attitude (all attributes necessary to survive in the NY scene)" to a "legendary" status. Even Bruce Springsteen is a huge fan, and can be heard counting "1-2-1-2-3-4" during the album's opening track, "Faster and Louder."

From the Album Cover Art Gallery:

"The cover photos take us back to a much more simple time. It's a time when a "gang" hung around the school yard drinking beer and smoking cigarettes and if they was to "rumble" a chain and a switchblade were the weapons of choice. Now it's crack out in back of the liquor store and an AK-47 if you happen to wear the wrong color or flip off the wrong guy. Who'da thought "juvenile delinquent" would end up being nostalgically cute."

Anyone know what schoolyard this was shot in?

i think is a park rather than a school yard
from what i can tell it looks like sara rossevelt park between chystie and forsyth at stanton st

I agree, it looks a lot like Sara Roosevelt park. And that would make sense since its so close to where CBGBs used to be. It also kind of looks like some of the parks in Forest Hills that are shown in the Ramones documentary "End of the Century."

Could it have been shot in that big yard on Hudson and Horatio?

Why don't you just stop by Manitoba's on B and 7th and ask Richie Manitoba? He could probably tell you.

Go over to that bar on Avenue B (I think it is) that one of them owns, and ask them...

This is totally in the west village. Hudson and Horatio.

Yeah it's not a school yard -- i love how Gothamist Jen Carlson assumes it is one. ON what basis, Jen?

I think it was shot on a soundstage in Charlotte, NC. That's about as much of a shot in the dark as "school yard." LOL

Isn't this a rip-off of The Warriors' movie poster?

Look at that guy standing with his arms akimbo and feet spread out about 2-3 feet apart.

So very 70's...

Off topic, but why does he go by Richie Manitoba now instead of "Handsome Dick" Manitoba? I never noticed that he switched to Richie.

There sure are a lot of know-it-alls here :)...It was shot in the playground of the Adee projects in the Bronx off of White Plains Road

Handsome Dick Manitoba is still Handsome Dick, but when you're at his bar, Manitoba's (99 Ave. B between 6th and 7th), call him Richard.

DFFD!
