Suspect Killed After Shooting Cop

2007_03_tejada.jpgA frisking turned fatal last night in Harlem. Plainclothes police officer Robert Tejada and three other officers were investigating reports of a man with a gun at Cafe 22 on Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard, near 136th Street. The NYPD says the officers identified themselves and searched a man. When Tejada was patting him down and found a gun, the suspect took out the gun and shot the cop twice, once in the ankle and once grazing Tejada's stomach.

Two of the other officers fired back at the man, Corey Mickins, and hit him at least four times. Mickins died two hours later at Harlem Hospital Center; he reportedly had a criminal history. Tejada (pictured) was taken to New York-Presbyterian as well and underwent surgery; the mayor, who visited, said, "He's in some pain, but he's doing fine." Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Tejada's bullet proof vest may have saved his life.

Mickins' mother, though, is saying the police used excessive force in trying to subdue her son. His father told WABC 7 that Mickins "was hanging on the corner at 136th Street. Police came up. They started checking him and pushing him around. He ran away, and they started shooting at him after he ran. I guess he returned fire."

Of course... police like to start up with people and shoot them if they run away.

PSA - It's never a good idea to "return fire" at police.

Why do reports always quote the victim's mother as if she's an unbiased witness?
What else would we expect her to say?
"well, yeah, I guess, he had a gun, someone had called the cops on him afterall, and what the hell was he shooting at them for?"
nope.
"you beat up my baby, who was completely innocent."
bingo.

Guilty.

Dead.

'nuff said.

why the semicolon here? it would seem that the following sentences about his injuries are more relevant to his death that his criminal past. come on, gotahmist!

Yeah, that was a bit of a non-sequitur.

once again, impressive point squidfly. thanks for the brilliant insight.

While I'm all for getting the guns off the streets . I totally disagree with the NYPD's "Stop& Frisk" policy .They tried it quite a few times on me and my brother over the years . They ask, We deny and they try to scare you by threatening to take you down too the precinct usually far from where they pick you up . I understand the excuse if you have nothing that might arouse interest, You shouldn't have a problem with being searched . Well I do have a problem with someone rummaging through my personal belongings "Searching for weapons" . This is how it starts, Today it's "Stop & Frisks", Tomorrow it's something worst .

I will never understand people who talk casualy about someone who died. As if they did not belong to a family just remember this could have very well have been someone in your family. Just remember that Corey is not here to tell his side of the story. As the law says innocent until proven guilty... Not just verbaly but real proof. which gun was it again the 9mm or the Colt 45. How many times was he shot 4 or 12 or both. Did he die at the scene. Or was he shot up then beaten like an animal on his way to the hospital. and on and on. Corey will end up telling his side of the story through a host of family members and friends. HEY you can't be that of a person if over 300 people show up at your wake and funeral
